It is the common belief that Lord Vishnu has the five aramaments like

Sudarsana disc,Panchajanya shanku,Koumodaki mace,Nandakam sword,

and Sharankhkam bow. When the Lord thru His sankhalpa can do everything

naturally the question aries whether He requires such wapons with Him?

But the Azhwars hv thought these weapons also as a part of His ornaments

as He never requires such things for His protection.Sriman Nikhamantha

Desikan says that Lord Hari himself took the form of Sudarsana

disc.. " Chakra

Roopasya Chakrina " .During Rama avathara He used the bow and arrows,in

Narasimhavatara He used His nails as a weapon, during Parasurama avatara He

used kodari{ a form of mace} and this became later as His weapons for the

protection of His devotees. He used the Panchajanya in Mahabharatha. That

gives

one great wisdom and jnana as the same had contact with Lord's lips.In the

case of Dhruva it was only after the Panchajanya touched his face he got

jnana.

So says Vishnu purana.Thinking all these weapons of the Lord would save one

from serious calamities,is the belief of ancestors. The Lord also used His

disc for protecting the elephant devotee from crocodile on the prayers of

the Gajendra.

There was/is a custom in some places to wear the chain for the young infant

with

five small lockets in which all the five weapons are embossed and tied to

the chain of the child and it is the belief that the same will protect the

child from all evils.Or in other words the same will act as a kind of

talisman.Afte the child has reached the age of 5 the same will be removed

as there is no necessity when the child starts talking. It is said even when

Sri Krishna was born the same chain

with lockets adored Him.Periazhwar praises this in one of his

thirumozhi(poem).

Children who suffer from balarishta, other bad influences etc can be wiped

out if

a chain is made along with the 5 lockets and the weapons of the Lord

engraved

on them will surely protect them.Normally it is done in gold according to

the capacity of the individuals.Sush is the power of the weapons that

normally a stotra named Panchayuta stotra is also recited by ancestors

along with Vishnu Sahsaranama. Those who recite this stotra will overcome

from all calamities and

will get the protection of the Lord Hari,is the belief. The same is also

praised in Kamba ramayana and other great works.

Hare Krishna.
