THE OLD MAN AND HIS WALLETOnce an old man was travelling by train on apilgrimage to Brindavan. At night, whilst he wasasleep, his wallet fell from his pocket. Aco-passenger found it the next morning and enquired asto whom the wallet belonged. The old man said it washis. A picture of Sri Krishna inside the wallet wasproof that the wallet really belonged to him.The old man then began to relate the story of thewallet. He soon had a group of eager listeners aroundhim. Lifting up the purse for all to see, the old mansaid: This purse has a long history behind it. Myfather gave it to me years ago when I was a mereschoolboy. I kept my little pocket money in it andalso a photograph of my parents.Years passed. I grew up and began studying atuniversity. Like every youth, I became conscious of myappearance. I replaced my parents¡¯ photograph withthat of my own and I would look at it often. I

hadbecome my own admirer. Then came marriage. Self-admiration gave way to theconsciousness of a family. Out went my own picture andI replaced it with that of my wife¡¯s. During the dayI would open the wallet many times and gaze at thepicture. All tiredness vanished and I would resume mywork with enthusiasm. Then came the birth of my first child. What a joy Iexperienced when I became a father! I would eagerlyrush home after work to play with my little baby.Needless to say, my wife¡¯s picture had already madeway for the child¡¯s.The old man paused. Wiping his tearful eyes, he lookedaround and said in a sad voice: Friends, my parentspassed away long ago. My wife too died five years ago.My son- my only son- is now married. He is too busywith his career and his family. He has no time for me.I now stand on the brink of death. I do not know whatawaits me in future. Everything I loved, everything

Iconsidered my own, has left me.A picture of Lord Krishna now occupies the place in mywallet. I know He will never leave me. I wish now thatI had kept HIS picture with me right from thebeginning! He alone is true; all others are justpassing shadows.SPIRITUAL COMMENTARYOnly God is our true relative, father, mother andfriend in this entire universe as this sloka says :Tvameva Mata cha Pita TvamevaTvameva Bandhuscha Sakhs TvamevaTvameva Vidya Dravinam Tvameva Tvameva Sarvam Mama Deva devaEverything else and every other relationship we holdin the material world is transitory. One cant predictthe tricks our mind plays. Even the closest of friendscan become worst enemies with time. Our own kith andkins may become our worst foes. Our own relatives mayditch us when we need them the most! Even a slightmisunderstanding can create a valley of gap betweentrue lovers! So whom can we
