Non-Stop Fun At Sunnyvale Diwali Mela

Bioethics Workshop at Hindu University of America

Hindu Physicist V.V. Raman on NPR's Speaking of Faith Broadcasts

on-Stop Fun At Sunnyvale Diwali Mela

SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA, November 8, 2006: Over 20,000 people attended the three-day Diwali Mela at the Sunnyvale Hindu Temple between October 20-22. The Mela was so successful that people were turned away. Women in colorful saris, giggling children, mouth watering food from local Indian restaurants, the latest Bollywood music, a bazaar, and moving religious rituals--the mela had it all. The atmosphere was warm, inviting and gave a flavor of India. The temple has an adjoining community center where the weekend's entertainment was scheduled. Over 13,000 people attended the Bollywood concerts on Saturday and Sunday nights. On Saturday there were 72 different performances by Bay Area children to celebrate this festival of light. A Laxmi pooja was held on Saturday that put all the devotees in the spirit of Diwali. It was non-stop fun for three days at the Silicon Valley temple.

2. Bioethics Workshop at Hindu University of America

ORLANDO, FLORIDA, November 10, 2006: The Hindu University of America, in partnership with the University of Central Florida Philosophy department, the Ethics Center, The Women's Research Center and the Orlando Regional Health Care spiritual Care council held a successful Bioethics Workshop - Hindu and Buddhist Perspectives on November 3. Philosophers, scientists, ethicists, health care professionals, spiritual care advisors and scholars addressed and discussed questions on Hindu/Buddhist bioethics. The chair of the workshop, Prof. Subhas R. Tiwari of the Hindu University, noted in his opening remarks that the thrust of these initiatives is to bring a voice which is spiritually tempered to the discussion of bioethics. "Neither Bioethics, nor the conversation it engenders is new," remarked Prof. Tiwari. "Hinduism has a documented history of 5,000 years of bioethics practice as evidenced in the ancient system of Indian medicine, called

Ayurveda, and its philosophy. Buddhism, much later, also evolved its own unique approach based on its philosophy of mindful awareness and compassion," commented Prof. Tiwari. The Hindu University believes that bringing these unique voices to the discussion serves to guide and infuse a more balanced approach which can influence and shape how bioethics behaves at the global level. Physicist V.V. Raman on NPR's Speaking of Faith Broadcasts

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, November 10, 2006: "The Heart's Reason: Hinduism and Science, with V.V. Raman" airs on the Speaking of Faith via National Public Radio across the United States from November 9 through the 15th. The program is a rich global dialogue between religious thinkers and scientists of many disciplines that is often obscured by headlines of a science/religion clash. This hour Krista speaks with a voice in that dialogue, Hindu physicist Varadaraja V. Raman. Where American culture finds cognitive dissonance, Raman describes a consonance of experience. The program explores the spirituality of Hinduism and the great tradition of science, as Raman puts it, through the intersection of the two in his life. The Speaking of Faith website features an annotated guide to the radio broadcast, essays by V.V. Raman, streaming MP3's of Indian music, explanations about its ties to Hinduism's rich traditions and texts, and lush images of

festivals devoted to the Goddess Saraswati. For a complete listing of broadcast locations and times, please see the "Stations" link at source.
