Guest guest
Dear Jithadevi, Sorry, I do not know much about fasting options for Diabetic persons. However, the following is what I found on a website regarding the subject (though, I strongly recomend you to talk with a DOCTOR before you fast) - " In general, prolonged starvation is not good for diabetics, as fat breakdown will cause acetone to appear in the urine and set up a vicious cycle of vomiting and more acetone in the urine. But in practice, persons with mild to moderate cases of diabetes who are on diet alone or on oral therapy are able to " keep " fasts for religious or other reasons successfully with the help of their doctors / specialists. However it is important that those diabetics who fast for a long period should adjust their medications and diet suitably and also keep a closer and frequent watch of their Blood Sugars, and Urine Sugar / Acetone during this period. " Again, do talk with your Doctor before before you fast. Some of our members may be able to help answering this question. Guest guest
Dear Sunil, Radhe krishna! As regards fasting, I understand wheat has been permitted even under the practices followed by our forefathers. Anyway, a diabetic should get the advice of his family doctor before embarking on rigorous austerities. A low sugar condition is as bad or even worse than a high sugar condition. Love KVG. My mother has always seen that I learn to keep the fasting on all important days like Thiruvathira, Ekadasi, Shivratri.. and I have been also trying to practice the same with fail. For Ekadasi the fast to start with eating a Tulsi leave and ending on next day after eating one small rice grain. Hope the same is okay. Guest guest
As far as I am concerned the engagemant of the mind is most important than the physical disciplines. Fasting must be to the senses. Those who are not able to fast due to health reasons r for instance need not feel guilty.Engage all your senses in the thought and worship of HIm for the whole day and that is enough. It is immaterial how you fast and whether you fast ay tall. The Lord wants your heart and not the external rituals. You do absolutely as you think is right. Vyasa called himself a nithya upavasi afer he ate full meals . THat is the detachmnt is more importand. In Bajagovindam of Sankara he says . ‘Yogaratho vaa bhogaratho vaa sangaratho vaa sangaviheenah yasya brahmani ramathe chiththam nandhathi nandhathi nandhathyeva.’ Whether he is seen practicing yoga or seemingly indulgent in bhoga his inner bliss remains unalloyed. We are not realised masters but we need not feel guilty in worshipping the Lord as no one knows you better that Him and He is ever close whether and however you follow the rituals. Do as you feel to the best of your ability and if you cannot due to circumstances beyond your contrlol don't feel guilty about it. Treat HIM as someone very close to you who is all mercy and understanding. Geetha Nair <geethasnin wrote: Dear Madam, I have a small doubt. Guest guest
Jai Sreekrishna Thank you Sunilji for the information As a matter of fact, I do observe fast on all Ekadasi. I take fruits, coconut water or something like that. Since I have to attend office, normally I take this during the day On the Dwadasi day I break the fast with Tulasi teertham and with a grain of rice within the stipulated period. Now for the information of the group members, the time for breaking the fast on Saturday the 2nd is between 6.56 and 10.37 AM . Thereafter I cook rice, make some curry and also pickle of nellikkai. I offer the same to Lord and then have the same as prasad for lunch. Dwadasi night also I do not eat anything except for fruits as far as possible. Ofcourse, on certain days, I feel hungry and on such days, I make upma of rava and after offering to Lord, I eat little of it. I do not follow any hard and fast rules, but make it a point to avoid rice, onion, garlic etc., on Ekadasi day. On Dwadasi days also no onion, garlic etc As far as possible, I try to chant HIS name while travelling and also while discharging my duties. Also I read Ambareeksha charitam apart from the specific dasakams I recite everyday in the morning. I try to speak as much less as possible and concentrate my attention in chanting Hare Krishna in my mind and also try not to hurt anyone , manasa, vacha, karmana and request God that my action be of Happy to HIM. This ofcourse I do everyday For Guruvayoor Ekadasi, God willing I am trying to avoid dinner for three nights, i.e., Dasami, Ekadasi and Dwadasi. But if I am unable to do so, no regret as I believe pure and ardra manas with HIS bhakti is what HE wants Since Gita dinam is also celebrated on the Guruvayoor Ekadasi day, I am planning to recite atleast few adhyams from Gita on that day viz. SankhyaYogam, Bhakti Yogam and Purushottama yogam However, for all the above, I need HIS BLESSINGS and am praying for the same. Also I have read in some book that if one can avoid atleast rice on Ekadasi day and manage with some laghu bhakshanam on that day and pray to HIM ardently, that is enough. Also it is mentioned that those who are old aged, very small children, pregnant ladies and people who are sick should not keep fast Humbly Syamala Sunil Menon <menon_sunil wrote: Dear All,Please remember that Guruvayoor Ekadasi is on December 1st. I wouldlike to know how many of you are fasting on Ekadasi day. Please mention if there is any special ritual or method you follow onEkadasi day.For those of you do not know much about Ekadasi, here is a genericversion that you can follow on the day.How To Fast on EKADASI-------------------------------Fasting generally means completely abstaining from both food anddrink. If you finds this impossible, then one should eat a singlenon-grain meal once in the afternoon or in the evening, which shouldconsist of roots grown underground (except beetroots), fruit, water, milk products, nuts, sugar and vegetables (except mushrooms and onions). If possible, one should not drink water more than once on Ekadasi. Ofcourse, if a complete fast impedes duty, it should not be observed, but the devotee should follow the fasting rules and still meet hisresponsibilities. On Ekadasi you should avoid the following: sleeping during the day, amassage with oil, eating more than once, drinking honey, eating withbell-metal utensils, spinach, honey, eggplant, eating in another'shouse, asafetida (hing) and sea salt.If by chance one forgets to observe Ekadasi on the appropriate day, hemay observe it on the next day, Dvadasi, and thus break his fast onTrayodasi. After carefully observing a fast on Ekadasi, following therules and regulations, one should break his fast within two and a halfhours after sunrise on Dvadasi.Who should fast ono EKADASI?-------------------------------Ekadasi fasting is not meant for brahmacaris or sannyasis. According to the scriptures, anyone older than five years of age should observe Ekadasi. One who is unable to fast due to serious illness or old age or pregnant women should seek out a devotee and give him/her charity on Ekadasi.Spiritual Benefits of Ekadasi vrata-------------------------------One who observes fasting on Ekadasi is freed from sin and advances inspiritual life.Material Benefits of Ekadasi vrata-------------------------------Both western and Ayurvedic medicine recommend fasting to maintain andimprove health. Fasting benefits one, both physically and mentally.Even from the economic point of view, fasting will save tons of food.Remember to read devotional books and write anything related to Bhagavan on this day. Please try to keep Ekadasi fast and pray for everyone in our group.Wish you all a Happy Ekadasi in advance.Om Namo Narayanaya:Sunil. Everyone is raving about the all-new Mail beta. Guest guest
Many thanks for informing us in advance. I always wait for this auspicious day every year. I just have a question with regards to the below rules. It is mentioned that Brahmcharis are not supposed to fast. Does that include unmarried people as well. Kindly confirm...
