It is celebrated on the first Wednesday of Dhanu Masam. It is said that Sudama ( later came to known as Kuchela Brahmanan) went to Dwaraka to have darshan of Lord Krishna on this day. Sudama and Sreekrishna were great friends while studying in the Gurukulam. Their Guru was Sandeepani Maharshi. After leaving Gurukul, life of both of them were totally different. Sreekrishna became Dwarakadeesha . Sudama was so poor that he could not even feed his family a proper meal. However, he was such an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna that he thought he can overcome anything with HIS blessings and he used to spent his time in poojas prayers. That is why he got the name "Bhakta Kuchela" His wife never tried to disturb Sudama and was happy with whatever they got from bhiksha. Neverthless one day she approached Sudama and requested him humbly to go and see Lord Krishna who can definitely put and end to their poverty. Kuchelan agreed to go to Dwaraka, not for asking any help form Lord Krishna , but with the desire to meet him after so many years. While leaving his wife gave him some puffed rice covered in a torn cloth. It was Sreekrishna's desire that Kuchelan come to Dwaraka and meet him and hence he reached there without any difficulty. When Sreekrishna saw Kuchelan , he came down to greet him and took him along. He then made him sit on his throne , washed his feet and have the teertham sprinkled on him as well as others around. Then they both started remembering about the days in the Gurukulam and how both of them had to spent one night in the forest because of heavy rain, thunder, lightning etc. They had gone to the forest to collect wood as asked for by the Gurupatni for cooking the food Kuchelan forgot everything on seeing Krishnan . He did not give the avil (puffed rice) he brought alongwith him. It is also said that he was trying to hide the avilpothi because he thought it has no value infront of the Rajakeeya life of Lord Krishna. But Sreekrishna grabbed the same by force and started eating the same with the comment" ethra swadishtam". The first bite of this avil so enough for giving all prosperity for Kuchelan. However, Kuchelan was unaware of anything and the very next day he left Dwaraka without asking anything from Sreekrishna. On his way, he suddenly remembered his family and the purpose for which he came. He was thinking how he will face his wife on whose request he went to Dwaraka with a purpose But to his surprise, when he reached home, in place of the hut, there was a beautiful palace and for a second, he wondered whether he returned to Dwaraka again. Then he saw his wife and children decked up with costly clothes and ornaments and he realised that this is the Leela of that Great Prabhu. He spent rest of his life singing the glory of Sreekrrishna. I am sure he must have attained moksha after his death It is very auspicious to read :Kuchelavrittam" and make offering of avil with all humility to Guruvayoorappan on this day.
