Dear Shri Balagopalji,

Om Namo Narayanaya

I am not very sure but i think 'chandanam' is pure sandalwood with nothing else added to it except water and the colour is creamy yellow, but in 'Kalabham' a bit of saffron too is mixed along with the chandan paste and water and it has a light yellow red hue.

humbly,

Jayashree

Radhe Krishna!

So far as my memory goes, Chandanam is pure paste of Sandalwood, used

in "Chandana-kappu" of the Lord, i.e., used to cover Unnikrishnan's

form, whereas Kalabham is the liquidised paste containing five

unguents, used to perform Abhishekam. The five unguents are, saffron,

sandal, musk, frankincense and Gorochana. The prasada chandanam we

get normally at the Guruvayoor temple does not carry the smell of the

other ingredients, but smells of only sandalwood. This may be

confirmed. Probably the Guruvayoor temple website can be referred to.

(?)

If any of our members are going to Bhagavan's temple

shortly, they may check it out and post the

information. This way we can know how kalabham is

prepared for our Bhagavan.
