Guest guest
Thrissoor Pooram made an excellent show in the TV all right. But it is a pity that those who organise this do have any heart or commonsense to take care of the poor elephants which are exposed to the extreme heat of summer, standing in the sandy soil dipping their sensitive feet in the hot sand, even without a drop of water to drink for more than 12 hours ! I wish there were at least one Gajendra in the group who could pray to Guruvayoorappan to take care of them. Is there any wonder in the pachyderms turning amuck? And when they turn amuck to show their protest, we will tie them up with chains, or if they turn violent out of sheer disgust, we will even go to the extent of shooting them down. Should man be so cruel, in the name of God? Is there no SPCA in the area ? Regards KVG.
Guest guest
Ohm Namo Narrayanaya; Ohm Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya Sri Gopalkrishnagi, The pooram organizing committee is arranging food and water to elephants at the time of pooram and they are watering on the soil in certain intervals. While Thrissur Pooram is attracting so many tourists our Tourism promotion council as well as government also supports pooram. Thrissur pooram dont have a long back tradition. It was started by the Sakthan Thamburan ruler of the Cochirajyam. At his time the " Thekkinkadu " was full of Teak trees and the Thieves and other intruders were living in it. So sakthan thamburan ordered to demolish all the trees (kadu) and make every thing visible. On that time the Velichapadu (komaram) of Paramekavu temple came there and told thamburan to do not destroy the Kadu. Thamburan killed that velichapadu. HE then ordered to start the Pooram festival to remove his guilty on killing the Velichapadu. The festival later known as thrissur pooram. Guest guest
Dear KVG, Do not fall to the secularists trap about cruelty towards elephants on Thrissur pooram, noise pollution on Deepavali, holi is bad for skin etc. The organisers have taken enough care and this year the ezhunnellippu was limited from 11am to 3pm, the noise levels of the crackers have been brought down. Guest guest
Dear Keerthiji, Radhe Krishna! Thank you for your kind elucidation, which is highly informative. I have never physically witnessed the Trissur Pooram as I never used to travel during the months of April/May because of the heat. I am a lover of elephants. I can understand their feelings, as they are more sensitive than human beings. During the Pooram telecast, i could not see anyone feeding the elephants or giving them drinking water. I asked others also who were watching the TV. I could see two elephants standing a bit off the line of other elephants and I could feel that they are feeling uncomfortable for some reason. The reasons are not far to seek either, What else can be, other than the heat, lack of drinking water and food? Cannot be toilet facilities! From then onwards, I was feeling that these two could turn amuck any time. And reports later said that it did happen. Elephants are very sensitive to heat, I have seen mahouts make the elephants beg, even in cities like Mumbai and Chennai. It is said the mahouts do not feed the elephants properly, and even pocket that money. Elephants, though cannot speak, they have very logical thinking and an excellent memory. The enmity of snakes and elephants (Ana-ppaka), is always avenged by taking the life of the mahout, if he doesnt show any compassion to the animal. They are also immensely loving, if reciprocated by the mahout. I hope the organisers, in this case, have analysed why the two elephants went amuck, and I hope they have understood the "Elephant psychology" and traced the very root cause of the problem. Regards KVG. Guest guest
Dear Premji, Radhe Krishna! I am sorry if I have offended anyone. What I wrote was my own observation, and not based on any other write-ups. I thought I should share my feelings to the members of the group, although it was slightly unpalatable, even to myself!. I am not against the Trissor Pooram or any of our traditional festivals which are immensely enjoyable, but the point I was trying to make was that we should also take ito account, the suffering of those poor animals who can give vent to their feelings only in their own way, which is often misinterpreted without understanding the animal psychology. No need to say, my heart bled for those animals who were exposed to long hours in the hot summer sun. No offence or malice or ill-will meant1 Regards KVG prem wrote: Dear KVG, Do not fall to the secularists trap about cruelty towards elephants on Thrissur pooram, noise pollution on Deepavali, holi is bad for skin etc. The organisers have taken enough care and this year the ezhunnellippu was limited from 11am to 3pm, the noise levels of the crackers have been brought down.
