Arjuna to Durga

I had sometime back requested for the sloka on Durga

purported to have chanted by Arjuna at the instance of

Bhagavan before the start of war to ensure victory. I

could not locate it and hence made the request in the

forum but in vain.

 

It has popped out and the same is posted below. It was

written by Shree Ganapathy Raman on Tue, 21 Nov 2006

12:27:07 -0000 in Dr.Sarojaji's 'Applied Gita'.

Grace of Durga.

It is the common belief that the avatr of Parasakthy

as Durga

bestows great success esp.in wars and all other wordly

calamities.

In Mahabharatha before the Great War started Sri

Krishna advised

Arjuna to worship Duraga to help in the victory.Though

the same

was not required as where there is Krishna there is

Victory.Still

Sri Krishna acted in a pragmatic way.Arjuna

accordingly prayed to Sri

Durga as follows:

 

VEDASRUTHY-MAHAPUNY E BRAHMANYE JADHAVEDASI

TWAM BRAHMA-VIDYA VIDHYANAAM MAHANITHRA CHA DEHINAAM

SAVITRI VEDHA MATHA CHA THADHA VEDANTA UCHHYATHEY

STHUTHASI TWAM MAHADEVI VISUDHHEYNANDHARATH MANEY

JAYO BHAVATHU MEY NITHYAM TWAT PRASADHATRANAJIRE.

 

ARJUNA WAS A CHUM OF SRI KRISHNA.BHAKTHA OF

SIVA.UPASAKA OF DEVI.

SO ALL THE MAJOR GODS OF HINDY PANTHEISM IS COVERED BY

THE CHARACTER

OF ARJUNA.

 

The above is during Krishna's time.In Sri Rama's time

also the same

thing happened which all may not know.

Before embarking on his mission to fight with Ravana

to bring back

Sita ,Sri Rama too prayed to Durga and created an idol

of Durga and

did the pooja to Her.On the direction of Sri

Rama,Hanuman brought

108 lotus flowers for the Pooja.Rama with ardent

devotion did the

pooja by reciting the namavali and offered the flowers

one after

another.Lakshman, Hanuman and others were watching the

ritual with

great concentration. Rama had offered 107 lotus

flowers.But Durga

hid the last flower ie.108.Rama became anxious and he

thought what

happened to the other flower and I can't get up half

way in the

ritual,oh Goddess what is this?,he lamented.My mother

Kausalya

used to call me lotus eyed child {Tamarai Kannan}.So

to complte

the pooja I offer my eye to you as the offering to

fill the gap of

the missing last flower and prepared to pull out his

eyes.As the

leela of Goddess is also equally great she gave Her

presence and

stopped Rama from his action and said 'Rama,I

appreciate your

devotion oand dedication.Only I hv hid the last flower

and gave the

same to RamaI just wanted to test you and you hv

won.So too you will

kill Ravana in the war and brought back Sita and

blessed Rama.

 

The real purport such stories is that Bhakthy is the

main plank on

which one can build real devotion.There is no

difference between the

various Gods though we call Him by vvarious names and

this is what

Krishna and Rama proved to worship Durga as she is

supposed to be

the Goddess of Victory and accordingly shuld be

propitiated. Though

all the forms are same but each has been allotted a

potfolio and

the same shuld be followed even for Rama,though an

avatar but in

human form and arjuna though a part of Narayana but

acted as a

human and both showed the greatnessof Bhakthy.Even

without

worshipping they would hv won the wars but they had to

follow the

uidelines for the humanity and to inculcate Bhakthy in

them.This is

the main purpose of their mission.
