What are we called before we are called Hindus

OM Namo Narayanaya, I was going though a video on how indians were made slaves by britishers. The commentator was telling that Bristishers found difficulty on naming us and finally landed in calling as Hindus. From then onwards we are calling ourselves as hindus which in my opinion is not true. Could some please let me know what are we originally called and what should I say when someone asks me who are. (like now I call myself as Hindu).
