Guest guest
Yes, Krishna was born at midnight when it was Ashtami & Rohini. But when is Ashtami & Rohini in calendars depends upon whom you ask. Dates vary from culture to culture as the Hindu calendar is not a standardized one. I would suggest you to follow either your home calendar or better yet - the day Janmashtami is celebrated in Mathura - where Krisha is born. That way you can make sure it is the correct day. Also, I suggest you to check with the local Hindu temple wherever you are to see when they are celebrating Krishnashtami. Generaly most of the American temples have elaborate Janmashtami celebrations at midnight including the beautiful rock the `jhoola' part that I like a lot. Most of the temples here in San Francisco Bayarea celebrate it on Sept 3rd night. If you need more technical aspect here it is Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the eighth day of the dark half (Krishna Paksha) of the month of Bhadrapadha in the Hindu calendar, when the Rohini Nakshatram is ascendent. The Hindu calendar being lunar, these two events [the day being the eighth of the waning moon (Krishna-paksha Ashtami) and the Rohini Nakshatram being ascendent] may overlap for only a few hours. In such an event, the festival may be celebrated on different (but successive) days by different people, depending on their local culture or family traditions. Janmashtami is celebrated for over two days as " Rohini " nakshatra and Ashtami may not fall on the same day. The first day known as Krishnashtami, as the birth of Bhagwan Krishna falls on the eighth day after Raksha Bandhan, which generally falls in the month of August. The second day is known as Kalashtami.
