!! Sri Rama Jayam !!

Barbareek is really a very popular & divine Mahabharata character especially for North Indians. He is born as the grandson of Bhimasena & son of mighty Ghatothkacha. Hidimba (wife of Bhimasena) is supposed to be the very preceptor of Barbareek. In some of the colloquials, his name is also referred to as 'Babru Vahana' meaning the 'Rider of Lion' symbolizing the element of 'Parashakti'. It has to be true for the reason that Hidimba was a supreme devotee of 64 yoginis (daughters of Siva) - the possessors of several siddhis.

But how does Barbareek seek his position in the grand epic is one of the interesting turning points in Mahabharata. Barbareek proves his might by defeating Bhimasena with very little effort. But at the very knowledge that Bhima is his grandfather he apologize for his ill-act to Hidimba & Bhima. Interestingly, Krishna enters the episode to test this mighty warrior of all times. Krishna takes him under the shadow of a Banyan tree. That tree deserves a special mention for it was also nearly impossible for the rays of sun to penetrate the leaves of the great Banyan & kiss the earth. Krishna enquired whether it was possible for Barabareek to cut hole through all the leaves of the great Banyan with one single arrow. Barbareek was 100% sure to do it. Chanting the mantra gifted by Hidimba, Barabareek shot the arrow & to the surprise it cut holes through all the leaves one-by-one & proceed towards Krishna's holy feet. Piercing the feet the arrow struck to the ground. Barbareek was shocked to see the arrow hit his most respected Lord Krishna. But the incident has to hv some reason and hence Barbareek enquired. Smilingly Krishna removed the arrow & lifting his wounded foot showed the Banyan leaf sticking to his bare foot which he had plucked earlier to test the accuracy & perfection of Barbareek's archery. Krishna declared that there was absolutely no warrior (even Karna or Arjuna also) on earth to match the skills of that great Barbareek. Expressing his interest to Krishna, Barbareek insisted to participate in the destined war of Mahabharata.

Krishna asked "For whom you would fight ?"

Barbareek replied "For the losing army".

"If so, it is sure that you might need to switch the army every another day becoz no army would win against you." said Krishna.

Confused Barbareek seeks Krishna's advice, who was also his Guru.

Krishna convey his divinity to Barbareek & asks for his head as guru-dakshina. With least amount of doubt in mind Barbareek beheads himself but with a strong wish to witness the whole war.

Krishna sprinkled 'Amrutham' on the head of Barbareek erected on a wooden platform on the eastern hill of Kurukshetra. Thus, Barbareek was blessed by Krishna to hear Bhagavad Gita & then witness the war.

In norther India, Barbareek/Babruvahana is a renowned temple deity worshipped in the name "Ghatu Shyam" which reflects his servantship for Krishna (Shyam).

That's all I know, other than as shared by shri balagopal ji.

HARI AUM"When the battle was over and Pandavas having won, they argued amongst themselves as who was responsiblefor victory. At this, Lord Krishna suggested thatBarbareek's head had watched the whole battle, and whoelse would be a better judge. Barbareek's said that hecould see only the Sudarshan Chakra revolving aroundthe battlefield which was hacking the Kaurava army topieces and Draupadi assuming the fearful form ofMahakali Durga was drinking bowl after bowl of bloodand was not allowing even one drop of blood to fall onthe earth."Doesn't it signify that everything is 'him' and restis only 'maya'!!Barbareek is an interesting character of Mahabharat.Hope someone will share more info on this.RegardsBalagopalNARAYANA NARAYANA NARAYANAWhy delete messages? Jai Shree Krishna:

Thanks for raising an interesting subject.

In Maheshvar Khand of Skandh Puran you will find the

life story of Barbarik including the reasons for his

death at the hands of Shree Krishna.

According to Skandh Purnan, Bhim arrogantly claimed to

have killed all the Kauravas. An annoyed Arjun told

Bhim that during the battles he saw a man killing all

the enemies. When approached for an independent

verification, by Pandavas and Shree Krishna,

Barbarik’s head agreed with Arjun and even described

Him and His weapons in detail.

With best wishes,

Kirit Shah
