It is a 96 page books and very enthralling. It has so many stories highlighting the bhakthi of the elephant Kesavan towards the Lord. Please try and read the book - it is very interesting. The author has provided a lot of information about the early years. Pranams, Suraj ________ Never miss a thing. Guest guest
Dear Jayanthi ji, The book is in Malayalam. I have not been formally trained in Malayalam but was enthralled reading the book from what little I knew. In case you have a problem reading Malayalam, you could buy the Malayalam Movie " Guruvayoor Kesavan " which is based on the elephant and was shot a few months after Kesavan's samadhi. There are beautiful scenes of the the temple and it's surroundings in the late 70's. The movie's script was written by the author of the book that I have mentioned below. There are some wonderful songs in the movie too. The description of the days leading to Kesavan's samadhi were touching. Other than Kesavan's life, the book also touches on Guruvayoor of the 1930's and later. Kesavan used to be anchored at the Zamorin's compound since the time he was brought to Guruvayoor. The area that used to be the Zamorin's compound is now the place where the SreeValsam guest house is. I think Kesavan's statue stands at the same place where he attained samadhi. The book also talks about Kesavan's flirtations with Lakshmikutty (a she-elephant brought a long time ago) - as Krishna did with the gopis.Lakshmikutty died around 5 -8 years ago. Guest guest
Dear suraji, Thanks for the response. It was nice to read the details mentioned in your mail. I cannot read malayalam hence will have to look out for some other book on the subject. Yes I did see the movie Guruvayoor Keshavan as you say the temple presmises and the surrounding area is quiet charming. I find the Bhakthi of the elephants more enchanting than that of saints .As it is least expected . I spend a lot of time watching them when I go to guruvayur. I once heard about guruvayur padmanabhan who lets only the melshanthi to climb from the front when he comes with the utsava vigraham and everybody else has to climb only from behind( He puts out his hind legs even for his mahout). So touching are these tales ,I hope krishna leela on asianet will bring out the stories of these pachyderm bhakthas as well.
