Guest guest
It was interesting to read this article in view of some of the recent mails from members on the plight of the temple elephants. -----------------------------Old-age home for elephants in Kerala4 Apr 2008, 0243 hrs IST,Ananthakrishnan G,TNNTHIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Exploited in their youth and physically abused when they are not able to work anymore, old elephants in Kerala can now look forward to a life away from the dreaded sharp hook of the mahout. The state's forest department is to launch an old-age home for elephants, the first in the country. The geriatric centre for elephants will come up in Kottur on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, as early as in May, say forest department officials. The centre will be a natural forest where 30 elephants can live for the rest of their lives. Kerala has the highest number of captive elephants (900) in the country. "We want to save elephants from the cruelties inflicted on them in their old age by their keepers,' forest minister Binoy Viswom told TOI . "We hope to launch the centre by the end of May." The centre in 100 hectares near a dam will also have facilities for fodder and veterinary care. "We have earmarked about 100 hectares for the centre near the Neyyar Dam as elephants need a permanent source of water," said chief wildlife warden V S Varughese. The project will be implemented in three phases. "In each phase, we will accommodate 10 animals. Each animal will have about half-an-acre to itself with a trench around," said Varughese. According to the forest minister, the rehabilitation centre will cost the government at least Rs 5 crore. The forest department hopes the Centre will help the unique project and so will elephant lovers. "We are also looking at the possibility of making the owners pay a part of the expenses if they choose to send their elephants to the centre," said Viswom.--------Om Namo Narayanaya.Group website: http://www.guruvayoor.com/Monthly magazine: www.guruvayoor.com/navaneetham You rock.
