Dear all,

Continuation of 24 names: " During marriage think of Prajaapathi "

Until I read several interpretations of the meanings of Prajapathi the only meaning obvious from the word was Lord of Prajaas or people. There is so much more to know about the word.

The word Prajapathi means " The Lord of that which is propagated or brought forth. (pra-forth, the verbal root jan- to be born, pathi-Lord). What is propagated or brought forth? All living beings, all creatures or offsprings.

Who is the Lord responsible for creation? Who is the master of progeny? Who is the progenitor of the manifested world? As per our understanding, Brahma is the main Prajapathi because he is in charge of Srushti. But in this context , we are thinking of the progenitor of the progenitor (Brahma) or Ultimate progenitor who is Vishnu.

In the beginning, he was the one Lord that existed. He supported everything with in Him. Here is a hymn from Rigveda to Prajapathi: " What God with our offering shall we worship?… O Prajapati, you alone have encompassed all these created things: may that for which with longing we have called upon you be ours....

Because Vishnu with the name Prajapathi is the Lord of progeny, during marriage ceremony the couple invokes Prajapathi with the following prayers:

" May we ever be in love. I hold your heart in serving fellowship... You are joined to me by the Lord of all creatures, Prajapathi, the progenitor of the manifested world. "

No wonder that this name of Prajapthi is very appropriate to think of before getting married. Prajapathi being the Lord of progenitor blesses us to continue the progeny!

Or we can even say that during marriage we invoke Brahma Prajapathi who has been given the portfolio of creation by the Supreme Prajapathi, Vishnu Bhagavan. So as we bow Brahma, it reaches the Lord of Brahma. ( " Sarvadeva namaskaaram Kaeshavam prathigacchathi " ).

Regards and prayers

Savitri
