Dear All,

Continuation of 24 names.

" During fight or controversial situations think of Chakradhara " . Let

us examine how this name of Vishnu is advised to be invoked during

fighting.

First let us think why he is called Chakradhara. Reason is obvious- He

his holding or wearing Sudarshana chakra in one of His four hands.

Sudarshana is a " Su " + " Darshan " . It means the vision (darshan) that

is auspicious(su). Chakra comes from two root words- " chruhu " meaning

" movement " and " kruhu " meaning " to do " . So chakra means the one that

moves or does the movement.

One explanations indicates that " The discus has six spokes and

symbolizes a lotus with six petals, thus representing the power that

controls all six seasons "

According to Vamana Purana this discus has been described as the

discus of time (kalachakra). It consists of twelve spokes and six

navels. The twelve spokes represent the twelve months of the Hindu

lunar calendar and the six navels represent the six seasons. ( by Mr.

Vasudevsharan Agraval)

Now we will examine when Chakradhara used his weapon Sudarshana Chakra:

1. When he lifted Govardhan, He held the discus to support it. This is

when Indra got angry when Yadavas neglected him and did pooja to

Govardhan mountain. Indra was humbled by Krishna .

2. Krishna killed Shisupala with chakra- annihilation of dushta jana,

wicked people.

3. It was used to create an artificial sunset so that Jayadrath could

be annihilated- used to protect his devotees.

4. King Ambarisha's story in which He throws the discus at Durvasas

Maharshi who cursed the greatest devotee of Krishna, Amabarish

Maharaja for no legitimate reason. In the end He withdrew the discus

as per the pious King's request.

5. Gagendramoksham in which He saves the elephant from the jaw of the

crocodile by cutting the head of the crocodile with Sudarshana Chakra.

6. Sudarshana entered the womb of Utthara, the wife of Abhimanyu to

protect the baby in the womb from the Brahmasthra sent by Aswatthama.

That baby was King Parikshith who became the only successor of

Pandavas.

There may be more instances in Purana when Bhagavan used his chakra to

save his devotees from danger and even today He is using his weapons

continuously to protect us, and because of the lack of punyam, often

we are not able to see it as His power and we say " By Luck or God's

grace what ever we call, we were saved from that dangerous situation " .

( I remember reading somewhere that Bhagavan's " sweet weapons " are

Shyaama varnam,Venu naadam and Paalpunchiri. How attractive is smiling

Shyama Sundaran with Murali in his hand !)

But these incidents tell us why it is auspicious to think of and pray

to Chakradhara during fight or controversial situations or dangerous

situations. If Dharmam is on our side, He will definitely send the

chakram to our rescue, even if it is adharma for Him to do. Protecting

His Dharmic devotees is his number one priority. That is why He took

the Chakra in His hand to kill Bhisma even though he had taken the vow

that He would not use any weapons during the war (Bishma's vow was

that he would make Krishna use a weapon ). Such is His love for His

sincere devotees.

Let the Chakradhara protect all of us from all evils and evil minded

people and not let us become evil in thoughts, words or deeds!

Even though all the sloka pushpaas in Narayneeyam are worth

memorizing, here the last slokam of 98th chapter is worth mentioning:

Melapthur Bhattathiri says:

" Oh Lord! your wheel in the form of Time, which is most irresistible,

having 12 spokes and 360 teeth, whirling with terrific speed, moving

fast, taking the world away every moment, may it not distress me for

whom Your feet are the sole refuge. Oh Guruvyurappa, protect me from

all afflictions " ( quoted from Bhaktharanjini Commentary)

Lord , please forgive me for any mistakes and all devotees, please

feel free to correct any mistakes.

Regards and prayers

Savitri
