Dear All,

Continuation of 24 names:

" When you are afraid of fire, think Him as Jalashaayin "

" Jalam " is water and shayanam is " lying down "

The meaning of this name is one who does " shayanam " on water.(kaarana jalam). So it stands to logic to pray Jalashayin, when we are afraid of fire. Water is cool to touch and can quench the heat of fire.

So let us extrapolate the meaning into the spiritual realm. When we are scorched with the fire of this samsaara in the form of kama, krodha, lobha, mada. moha and maatsarya, surrendering to Jalshaayin who is continuously moving in the " Kaarana jala " will help to destroy all the " kaaranaas " or root causes of our sorrow.

It will be interesting to note how much importance we give to water, one of the five elements. (earth, water, fire, air and ether) As per DR. V. Shankaran Nair, " In the graphical depiction of " panchabhuta " water is represented by a circle, symbolizing fullness. Water represents the non-manifested substratum from which all manifestations arise. " Akshitha " means imperishable. Water is akshitham and in the matter of purity it is like eyes and hence also called " Akshitharam. Water is a purifier, life-giver and destroyer of evil. "

So one who is cooler than the coolest water, purer than the purest water, whose akshis( eyes) are filled with the Akshitham (water) of kindness and rests on this Kaarana jala is definitely the most appropriate form of God to eradicate all the root causes of the fear of the fire of material existence.

Let us conclude this theme with the most appropriate prayer for the Jalashaayin Vishnu Bhagavan:

SHAANTAAKAARAM BHUJAGASHAYANAM PADMANAABHAM SURESHAM

VISHWAADHAARAM GAGANASADRASHAM MEGHAVARNAM SHUBHAANGAM

LAKSHMIKAANTAM KAMALANAYANAM YOGIBHIRDHYAANAGAMYAM

VANDE VISHNUM BHAVABHAYAHARAM SARVALOKAIKANAATHAM

I bow to Lord Vishnu the one Master of the Universe, Who is ever peaceful, who reclines on the great serpent bed, from whose navel springs the lotus of the creative power, who is the supreme being, who supports the entire universe, who is all-pervading as the sky, who is dark like the clouds and

has a beautiful form; the Lord of Lakshmi, the lotus-eyed one, whom the yogis are able to perceive through meditation, He, who is destroyer of the fear of samsar.

Regards and prayers

Savitri
