Guest guest
Dear All,Datthathreya's fifth Guru is Fire, the flaming will of Divinity. We can see and experience fire in many ways: blazing fire, smoking fire, lightning, etc. Dharma of fire is to burn and purify anything that comes in contact with it. Also Fire accepts the offering of anyone irrespective of the source it is coming from. It burns down the sins and remains pure. The only lakshyam (intention) of fire is to purify and convert the object into ash. It's focus is never diverted and who ever comes in contact with Fire reaches the same state. It can be a king or a beggar, Fire accepts, burns the offering the same way and transforms it into the same ash. There is no partiality. Fire has no specific form, it varies with the fuel used for burning. The only thing we can see is that a fire always burns up and NEVER in the down ward direction, unless forcefully directed. Dattathreya learnt the following lessons by closely and carefully observing the characteristics of fire: 1. A realized soul should accept food or any offering from any one, burn down the giver's sins and bless him.2. Soul is with out any form, but stays inside the physical forms of different living beings and manifests as animals, birds, humans etc. (Fire takes the form of what ever it is burning) 3. Like the fire one should always think and do karmaas that will uplift our soul. This means one should never entertain negative thoughts or actions. (Fire always burns upwards)4. Every manifested thing has a beginning and an end (or birth and death). What remains before the beginning and after the end, is the true Self, which is eternal, unmanifest and omnipresent. ( It is interesting to learn that even though Aum is the first sound created, Agni is the first word ever formed in the universe. Rigveda starts with the word Agni: Agnimeele purohitham..... )Regards and prayers Savitri
Guest guest
Om Namo Narayanaya.Dear Savitriji,Very nice to see your series on Lord Dattatreya and thanks for doing this. I have always wondered why Datta Bhagwan is not worshipped much outside of say Maharashtra or probably even Karnataka. In Pune city, Lord Dattatreya's is a common form, as revered as Lord Ganesha and Hanumanji (the two most popular and well loved Gods there). In most neighborhoods there will be a small temple dedicated to the three-faced God. In most local government offices, the annual Datta Jayanti is celebrated in a grand manner. The couple who have Bhagwan as their son are indeed special - hence Lord Dattatreya being born as Devi Anasuya's son. The Ramayana tells us that during their vanwaas (exile), when Rama and Sita visited Atri muni, Devi Anasuya (a paragon of virtue) blesses Sita and gives her an anga vastram to keep her protected.Lord Dattatreya imparted the "Tripura Rahasya" to Sri Parashurama (you may already know this). A devotee of Ramana Maharishi (who is said to have been very fond of the Tripura Rahasya) translated it into English which can be read here - http://sss.vn.ua/tripura1.htmWith regards and prayers,Veena.Savitri Puram <savitriopuram wrote: Dear All,Datthathreya's fifth Guru is Fire, the flaming will of Divinity. Guest guest
Dear veenaji, Thank you very much. I also did not know much about Dattathreya until I happened to read a very informative article by K.P Naraayana Pisharody ( Pisharody maashu) in an old magazine called Anaadi. Later I took interest and read the Bhagavatham moolam and was delighted to read the avadhoota Gita and Pandit Gopalan Nair's interpretation. But I never knew about this Trpura Rahasya of Dattathreya. Thanks for sharing that link. I will try to read slowly and understand the text. Until now I have heard only about Trpura sundari rahasya, that is about Devi and Nava aavaranaas etc. This will be really interesting to read. Hope you are progressing well in your thesis work.
