Dear all,

Surya Bhagavan, the eternal lamp of the Universe is Dattathreya's 7th Guru.

First let us glance through some mind boggling facts about Surya Bhagavan. According to Maarkandeya Puraana, Surya was born from the Omkaara naadam. Surya's chariot has only one wheel and drawn by seven horses in seven rainbow colors. As per Bhagavatha, the single wheel of the chariot is the kala-cakra, or wheel of time. This wheel is known as Samvatsara. (So when the wheel rolls, years pass pushing us closer to death everyday. So rising of the Sun every morning indirectly reminds us not to waste any time and Surya bhagavan is showering enough energy and light to perform each one's duty to one self and the world) The seven horses with different colors are are known as Gaayatri, Brhati, Usnik, Jagati, Tristup, Anustup and Pankti. The driver of the chariot is Aruna Deva and the yoke is 900,000 yojanaas wide.(about 7,200,000 miles) Thus Surya Bhagavan travels through the universe for a distance of 95,100,000 yojanas (760,800,000 miles) at a speed of 16,004 miles at every moment. (calculations are from A.C Bhakthivedanta Swaami's Bhagavatham interpretation). Surya Bhagavan's commute to serve the whole world shows His commitment and sincerity! Let us do a namaskaar with the Gayathri Manthra before proceeding to Dattathreya's perception of Surya Bhagavan:

Om Bhur Bhuva swa:

Tat Savithur VarenyamBhargo Devasya DheemahiDhiyo Yona: Prachodayaat

Surya Bhagavan gives light energy to the entire world and is a friend of all life forms. So he is also known as Mitra or friend. In fact, He is the most trusted Mitra of everybody. His generosity in giving away all his light illuminating one part of the world for 12 hours and illuminating the other part of the world for the next 12 hours is exemplary.

Surya evaporates water by the power of his energy, holds it for sometime as clouds and gives back to earth as cool and fresh raindrops. He takes water from all bodies of water (salty water of ocean, dirty and stagnant water from pools, clear water from rivers etc), purifies them and distributes back in the form of pure water. It is said that the " sookshma sushiraas " or small micro holes in our body are equivalent to Sun' rays and rays penetrate and purifies our body. Even the modern scientists agree that exposing to sunlight for sometime everyday is beneficial. This tells us to earn money, knowledge, food etc through dhaarmic ways not only to enjoy, but also to share with less fortunate people.

We can see the reflections of the one and only Sun in different places like tanks, lakes and even in big vessels filled with water, as many Suns. Like this, the single Chaithanyam or universal soul is reflected in all of us.

Just like the Sun's rays cannot be contained in a vessel, atma is limitless and omnipresent.

Surya Bhagavan became the Guru of Dattathreya and taught him :

1. Be a generous and trustworthy friend or Mitra to all.

2. Collect knowledge and everything else through dharmic ways and share with needy people.

3. Same Easwara chaitanyam is reflecting in all of us like the same Sun's reflection can be seen in a pot of water, a tank and a lake or river.

4.Like Sun, Atma is limitless and omnipresent.

5.A wise soul should see Surya Bhagavan as a daily reminder telling us to utilize wisely every moment of our life .

Regards and prayers

Savitri

P.S. We are advised to turn to East and pray in the morning. As per Upanishads, " Sun rises as the very praana of all living beings in the world. In the entire direction of the east, the atmosphere is charged with praana shakthi of Surya Bhagavan. So when we face east for our mantra recitation, power of Mantra gets multiplied several times with the power of Praana shakthi of Surya Bhagavan. "

Please feel free to correct any of my misunderstandings.
