Dear All,

How a pigeon became a Guru of Dattathreya?

Once there lived a pair of pigeons on a nice tree. Both the male pigeon and female pegion had a very affectionate nature and intensely loved each other. In course of time, the female pigeon gave birth to a few eggs and in another few weeks they started enjoying the cute little baby pigeons hatched from the eggs. Both of them loved the babies and everybody in the family were very attached to each other.

Once the mother and father pigeons went to gather food for the babies and for themselves. As in every story, during that time, a hunter came and caught the babies in his net. Mother pigeon came back with the food and saw the plight of her beloved children. Not able to withstand the sorrow, it started to fly around the scared little ones and finally got entangled herself in the net. After a few moments, the father pigeon came and saw that his sweet heart and babies are trapped in the hunter's net. This scene broke his heart. Unable to even think of a life with out his dear ones, he also fell or jumped into the net. Their bad luck became the good luck of the hunter and he happily took all of them, went home, cooked and ate with his family.

Dattathreya contemplated on this story and realized a big truth. He explained this to King Yadu:

Pigeon is a bird with out Vishesha Buddhi or power of discrimination. Humans are different. After so many births in the lower species, finally God has given us the life of a human being with the power of discrimination. So a wise person should not be like the pigeon couple. It is easy to get caught in the net of attachment and possessiveness and this brings lot of misery and even destruction. The soul is originally free. But when associated with the body, it identifies itself with body and thus falls in to the endless cycle of birth and death. The lesson is not to be like the pigeon family and turn all the attachment and love slowly towards the Lord and then He will bless us with detachment towards the world and we will not suffer like the mother and father pigeons.

Regards and prayers
