Guest guest
Dear all, Tenth Guru of Dattathreya is the vast Samudra or Ocean. The sanskrit word Samudra means " gathering of waters " - " sam " meaning together and " udra " meaning water. In reality, all the rivers flow towards the sea and merges in the vast ocean.Even during rainy season, when rivers get full and more and more water joins the ocean, the ocean level remains the same. In summer lot of rivers dry out and volume of water flowing to the sea becomes much less. At this time also sea level remains the same. It shows a steady level of maturity in keeping the level. We cannot measure the depth of an ocean. We can say that it is unfathomable. Waves are formed in the ocean, it keeps moving taking a lot of water with it and finally dies down to become the ocean. Sankaracharyar in his Shatpadi sthothram says that: waves belong to the ocean and never the ocean belong to the waves. (samudro hi tharanga: Kvachana samudro na tharanga) Warm and cold water are transported by ocean currents around the globe. Warm water flows towards the poles and cold water flows towards the equator to get heated. Ocean is constantly doing this service to the world. Dattathreya gained a lot of wisdom by observing Samudra: 1. Like the ocean maintaining a steady level of water, a wise man should accept joys and sorrows of life with equanimity. Intensely reacting to both will result in misery. 2. A wise person's nature is unfathomable, unknowable and unconquerable like the depth of ocean 3. Like waves are formed in the ocean, sustained by the ocean and die down to become ocean again, we belong to Him, sustained by Him, and go back to Him. 4. Like the currents travelling constantly from pole to pole to transport hot and cold water, a serious spiritual aspirant may move from place to place to avoid attachment and impart knowledge to deserving students. To do service with out attachment is the lesson to learn from this characteristic of the ocean. Regards and prayers Savitri
