Dear all,

Valmiki wanted to write about the story of a perfect man or poorna

Purusha on earth. When he was toying with this idea with deep prayers,

Narada Muni appears there to help Him. Valmiki told Narada that he

wants to write the story of a person with all 16 qualities. They are

called Shodasha kalaas. Then Narada told Valmiki about Lord Srirama

who had taken Manushyaavatharam as King Dasaratha's son and was ruling

Ayodhya at that time. He told Valimiki that there was nobody other

than Srirama who had all the 16 qualities he was looking for.

O sage Valmiki, such a human being indeed is there. He was born in

Ikshvaku Dynasty, He is called by the name Rama meaning " ramayathe

ithi " or one who brings happiness.

Then Narada tells the story of Rama in brief and that is called

Samkshepa Raamyaayanam. Since we all know the story, let us look at

the 16 qualities or Shodasha kalaas of Sri Rama, the Maryada

Purushotthama Rama.

1. Gunavaan- one who has good principles, virtuous

2. Veeryavan- valorous

3. Dharmajna: -well versed in Dharma or righteous

4. Kruthanja: - One who has gratitude or remembers whatever service done to him.

5. Sathyavakya: -True in words or one who speaks only truth.

6. Dhrudhavrata: - Unswerving in his vows or one who never breaks a vow.

7. Charithravan- one who has good conduct

8. Sarvabhutha hita: - One who is a well wisher of all, one who acts

for the welfare of all.

9. Vidwan - One who is a scholar

10. Samartha: -one who is clever and able

11. Sadaika priyadarshana: one whose darshanam is dear to everybody or handsome

12. Atmavan- One who has knowledge of Atma or self realization, one

who has self respect.

13. Jithakrodha: - One who has anger under his control

14. Dyuthiman - enthusiastic, brilliant

15. Anasuyaka: One having no jealousy

16. kasya bibhyati devascha jatha roshasya samyuge - The one whom even

devaas are afraid of when He is angry. (he never looses his temper.

But he will not tolerate adharma and to restore dharmam he may show

anger and then even devaas are afraid of Him.

With Pranaamams to Lord Rama Chandra, who belongs to the Sun dynasty

or soorya vamsham and still carries the name Rama Chandra!

Regards and prayers

Savitri
