Guest guest
Dear all, Kashi is famous and the belief is that those who are fortunate to die in Kashi will have no more birth. Kashi has many names and let us examine the different names and their significance. 1. Kashi- the root word Kash means " to shine " , So Kashi is the place where the most auspicious or mangala (Shiva) brilliance or supreme light shines. 2. Avimukta- Place that is free of sin because of the presence of the most mangaladaayin God Shiva. 3. Varanasi- This holy place is between the two rivers Varana and Asi and hence the name. Ganga meets these two rivers and Ganga is the " fluid medium of Shiva's divine essence " . 4. Aananda kaanana- Literally means the forest of bliss or happiness. Shiva bhagavan likes this place and because of His presence, it gives limitless aananadam to Himself and devotees. 5. Maha smashaanam- Divine cemetery. When the jeevaatma leaves the body, body merges in to the panchabhootas and panchabhootaas merge in Shiva or the abode of Shiva. There is no more birth or death for that soul. Because of this belief, dying persons and dead bodies from far-off places are brought to Kashi for cremation at the Manikarnika and other cremation sites. Kashi is one of the " mokshadaayika " city situated near one of the seven sacred theerthaas, Ganga. Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya, Kashi, Kanchi, Avanthika, and Puri are the seven cities and Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswathi, Godavari, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri are the seven theerthaas. Ganga tharanga ramaneeya jata kalaapam Gouri niranthara vibhooshitha vaamabhaagam Naaraayanapriyamananga madaapahaaram Vaaraanaseepurapathim bhaja Viswanaatham Pray to that lord of the Universe,Who lives in Vaaraanasi,Whose hair holds the waves of river Ganga,Whose left side is decorated by the presence of Gouri,Who is dear to Lord Narayana ,And who destroyed the pride Ananga or Kaamadeva.
