Dear GuruDevs,

My next Guruvayur legend is about the story of Manjula and Manjulal,a large Banyan tree in the east nada of Guruvayur,.The story occured during the time of of the poet, Melpattur and Poonthanam. There are more than one version of this legend. The important details are the same.

Manjula was an ardent devotee of Guruvayurppan ,since childhood.Since she belonged to the Varrier caste, who makes garlands for the Lord,She used to bring one garland every day to the sannidhanam which the priest used to adorn the Idol.Gradually she grew up into a beautiful teenager and started to imagine herself as Radha,The Lord was pleased with her devotion, but He decided to test her devotion.

One day,He posed as an old Brahmin and obstructed her way to the temple. He tried to snatch the garland from her and asked her to marry HIM.Manjula did notrealise who He was and became furrious. But the old Brhmin was not ready to give up. He threatened her of dire consquences if she did not surrender to him..Manjula cries to her Krishna and faints. The Lord became pleased with her, blesses her and vanishes,( unknown to Manjula)

Manjula suddenly woke up, saw that it is getting late in the evening and hurries to the temple. She was so disappointed to find that the templewas closed .She cried to her Lord asking for forgiveness.

Poonthanam was doing the namajapam nearby inthe temple, saw Manjula and asked her why she was unhappy. She explained that she was not able to give the garland for thatday',s pooja and that Lord would be angry at her..Poonthanam consoled her that God is everywhere and asked her to offer the garland on a stone idol under the banyantree outside in the east nada .Manjula put the garland on the stone idol and went home, praying God not to punish her.

The next day,at 3am Poojari opened the sannidhanam and started to do the nirmalyam. He was able to remove all the garlands except one..He tried to remove the garlands many times, but every time, one garland remained. Intrigued by this phenomenon, he thought he di some mistake in the pooja. But Poonthanam came there and immediately remembered the incident on the previous day. He told the devotees present there to get Manjula to the

sannidhanam and to give the garland back to her. The garland stopped appearing as soon as Manjula got her mala as prasadam!!

The tree under which Manjula put the garland came to be called Manjulal.

Lord appears to every devotee in which ever way the devotee prays in his or her mind. To KuroorAmma and Poonthanam, He appeared as a child and to Manjula, as a a young adult!!

May Guruvayurappan bless all the GuruDevs in which ever Roopam they want to see HIM

Dear Sreedeviji,

It is excellent! how can you read these stories with out tears flowing down your cheeks? I consider reading this in the morning as a blessing and helps me to think of His kindness throug out the day! Let all the small garlands we all try to make with our thoughts, words and actions decorate Krishna!

Pranaamams to all parmama bhaagavahtaas!
