Dear all,

Meaning of " deeksha " is initiation and one definition given is " Solemn induction by which one is entered into a new realm of awareness and practice by a teacher or preceptor through the bestowing of blessings and the transmission of pranas. Denotes initial or deepened connection with the teacher and his lineage and is usually accompanied by ceremony. "

This initiation, can be in 4 ways:

1. By words- Manthra deeksha

2. By looking- Chakshu deeksha

3. By remembering- Smarana deeksha

4. By touching- Sparsha deeksha which in turn can be in three ways:

a. Blessing by touching of the head by hand - Hastha masthaka deeksha

b. Blessing by touching with feet- Paada deeksha

c. Blessing by touching the head by the feet of the Lord Himself.or initiation by putting the sacred feet of the Lord on the devotee- Shri paada deeksha. After that the disciple is called Bhagavath paadar or charanar. Bhagavath paadar means one who wears the feet of Lord on his head and has become one with God.

Next we will look at the story of how Bhaktha Kabir Das got Paada deeksha from Shri Raamaanander. The story is that even though Kabir was born as a Hindu he was raised by a Muslim family as a Muslim boy by the name Kabir. But he was a great devotee of Rama and he wanted to get Manthropadesham from the well known saint Raamaanander. Kabir was reluctant to ask him for deeksha because he was afraid whether he would accept a muslim as a disciple and give deeksha.

One smart idea came into his mind. Every early morning, before sunrise, Raamaanander used to go to River Ganga for his daily ablutions and prayers. Kabir decided to lie down on his Guru's way to the river hoping that Guru would step on him and he would get Paada deeksha from him. So next morning he laid down on Raamaanander's path to the river and in the dark morning, Raamaaananader did step on Kabir. Realizing that he stepped on a human being, Raamaanander bent forward and touched Kabir and in atonement loudly chanted " Rama Rama. "

Immediately Kabir got up and did saashtaanga namaskar and thanked him for giving him Paada deeksha and advising him the thaaraka manthram " Rama " . It is called a thaaraka manthram because chanting Raama Naamam will help one to cross the ocean of life.

Kabir became a great Bhaktha and attained moksham. Bhagavan's ways of blessing people are countless!

Regards and prayers

Savitri
