231. sahasramoorDhaa

 

Thousand heads. He is endowed with infinite capacity to know and act.

 

sahasra SIrshA purushah sahasrAkshah sahasra-pAt- (purusha sUktam)

sarvatah pANi pAdam tat sarvato'kshi Siro-mukham (gItA 13.13)

viSvataScakshuruta viSvatomukho viSvato bAhuruta viSvatspAt

(Thaithireeya Up.)

 

The Lord has thousand heads, eyes and hands and feet, meaning that He is everywhere. As everything is His sareera he has innumerable heads, eyes ,hands and feet. Denotes His omnipresence and omniscience

 

232. viSvathmaa

 

He is the self of all.

 

233. sahasraakshaH

 

Thousand eyed

 

234. sahasrapath

 

Thousand feet.

 

235.aavarthanaH

 

aavarthayithum Seelam asya ithi aavarthanah. The one who makes everything revolve. The cycle of birth and death, day and night, joy and sorrow all go round and round through His maya as the Lord says in Gita, `eeSvaraH sarvabhoothaanaaam hrddheSe arjua thishTathi , bhraamayan sarvabhoothaani yanthraarooDaani maayayaa,'(BG.18.61) the Lord is in the heart of all beings revolving them through His maya as though mouned on a wheel.

 

236.nivrtthaathmaa

 

nivrtthi means to turn away or not being affected. The Lord even though activates everything being their inner self, is not affected by the actions or their results, as He says in the gita, `na maam karmaNi limpanthe na me karmaphale sprhaa,' (BG4.14) The Upanishad describes the jeevathma and Paramathma as two birds on a tree, the former experiences the joy and sorrow like sour and sweet fruits while the latter looks on without eating.'dhvaasuparNaa sayujaa sakhaayaa sayujaa sakhaayaa samaanam vrksham parishasvajaathe; thayoH ekah pippalam svaadhu atthi anaSnan anyaH parichaakaSeethi.' (Mund.UP.)

 

237.samvrthaH

 

He is samvrtha or gooDa, unseen for those who are covered with thamas. The Lord says, naaham prakaasaH sarvasya yogamaayaasamaavrthaH,' (BG.7.25) "I am not manifest to all veiled by my maya."

 

238. sampramardhanaH

 

One who dispels the darkness of thamas. Samyak mardhayathi svavidhyayaa thamaH. When thamas signifying ignorance is dispelled through the grace of the Lord, the knowledge of His svarupa shines like the sun.'jnaanena thu thadhajnaanam yeshaam naaSitham aathmanaH theshaam aadhithyaveth jnaanam prakaaSayathi thath param.' (BG-5.16)

 

239.ahaH samvarthakaH

 

One who regulates the day, meaning, the wheel of Time. In the gita Krishna says that He is the imperishable time `ahameva akshyaH kaalaH,'(BG.10.33) which is divided into units like day and night etc.

 

240.vahniH

 

vahanaath vahniH. He bears all which are His sareera being their inner self. The general meaning of vahni, which is fire is also applicable as the Lord as the fire in the sacrifices makes the devas get their oblations.

 

241. anilaH

 

anilah means air

 

Thadheva agniH thdhvaayuH (Tat.up.) Brahman is the fire and He is the air.

 

ananaath anilah – Giver of life breath.

 

Elayathi prerayathi ithi ilaH. Na ilaH anilaH- preraNa means urging. The Lord is anila because he does not need any urging to protect the devotees.

 

ilathi also means sleeping. Anila means one who never sleeps.

 

243.DharaNeeDharah

 

One who bears the earth. dharaNee means earth. The Lord bears the earth as Sesha and also carried the earth as Varaaha.
