In Bhagavadgita Krishna speaks as Bhagavan, which means saguna brahman and not as an individual, the son of Vasudeva and Devaki. He is addressed by Arjuna in some shlokas as `Madhusudana' , which means slayer of the demon `Madhu'. According to the puranas, it was Vishnu who killed the demon Madhu and not Krishna. By addressing Krishna as Madhusudana the identity of Krishna and Vishnu, who is saguna brahman, is brought out. In Vishnusahasranama (the 1000 names of Vishnu), the name `Krishna' appears twice. In his Bhashya on Vishnusahasranama Shri Shankara gives the following meanings for the name `Krishna:-- 1. krish means `Existence' and `Na' stands for Bliss according to Vyasa. So Krishna means `Sat-chit- Ananda'. 2. Krishna means `Krishna Dvaipayana' or Vyasa. Vyasa and Vishnu are the same. According to Srimad Bhagavatam, Krishna is the son of Vasudeva. According to Sanskrit grammar, the son of Vasudeva is called VAsudeva. Thus VAsudeva is one of the names of Krishna. But this name appears in the Vishnusahasranama as the name of Vishnu himself three times with three different meanings given by Shri Shankara. These three meanings are:-- 1. vasati vAsayati AcchAdayati sarvam iti vAsuH; dyotate iti devaH; vAsuScAsau devaSceti vAsudevaH--- Meaning—He dwells in, and covers everything and so he is vAsu; being effulgent, he is deva. He is thus both vAsu and deva, i.e., vAsudeva. 2. vAsudeva is the son of vasudeva. Here the identity of Krishna and Vishnu is clearly brought out. 3. He is the God who covers the universe with his Maya and so he is vAsudeva. Thus it has been clearly shown that Krishna is none other than Vishnu who is saguna brahman, who is not different from nirguna brahman. So Krishna is the supreme brahman, the indwelling Self of all. The truth of advaita that there is nothing but brahman is brought out in this way. S.N.Sastri Connect with friends all over the world.
