Dear all,

Sankaraachaarya swamigal had a disciple called Sanandan. He told Sankaraachaarya that he wanted to have a darshan of Lord Narasimha and requested for manthropadesham. Even though Sankaraachaarya felt that Sanandan was not quite ready, when he insisted, he gave the manthropadesham and prayed Narasimhamurthy to bless him.

Sanandan went to the forest and started meditation and penance. Months passed and nothing happened. A hunter was watching him doing the penance and he felt sorry for Sanandan. He started collecting fruits for him and kept them in front of him. At first Sanandan did not notice and never ate any thing he brought. After a few days Sanandan was worried whether the hunter will be offended if he ignored him completely. So he started eating a few fruits. '

Then they became familiar to each other and one day the hunter asked the reason for Sanandan's penance. Then Sananadan told the hunter that he was meditating Narasimha, a roopam or figure of Bhagavan as half lion and half man. Hunter did not know who is Narasimham or the seriousness of Sanandan's meditation. Hunter laughed and said there was no animal like that in that forest and it was futile to meditate on something that did not exist in that forest. Anyway Sanandan said that there was Narasimham and He would appear in front of him if he chanted the manthram given by his Guru and prayed.

Hunter did not know anything about manthram or guru. But hunter promised that he would also search for it as much as he could. With intense focus he started searching for Narasimham. Everyday he searched for hours and after a while the imaginary figure of Narasimham was the only thing in his mind. Day and night he saw Narsimham in his innocent mind, searched for him in every cave and called out his name loudly several times. This continued for several months. His search and call became more and more powerful with intense focus and Lord Narasimha could not help appear in front of this innocent hunter who was meditating him all the time.

So when hunter looked and called Narasimha in front of the next cave, Lord appeared and came and stood near him like a tamed animal. Hunter was elated with joy and held Lord's hand and told Lord that he would like to take him to Sanadan who was meditating for a long time to see Him. He brought Lord in front of Sanandan and when Sananda opened his eyes, he saw Lord Narashimha standing near the hunter smiling and blessing him. He did saashtaanga pranaamam and tears of joy rolled down his eyes. He burnt all his ego at the feet of Narasimha Murthy and realised how this hunter with no tapas, no manthra, no Guru attained salvation! Only intense focus and niranthara smarana or continuous meditation were his sadhana. He did not even know that he was praying or searching for God! Fortunately his target of concentration was Bhagavan and Bhagavan was pleased with his niranthara smarana.
