Guest guest Posted December 8, 2008 Report Share Posted December 8, 2008 HARIVARASANAM============== All bhaktas especially Ayyappas silently chant Harivarasanam kirtanam during this auspicious makaravilkku season. Every night before closing the sreekovil nada at Shabarimala, the melshanti and the kizhshnti stand on either side of the ayyyappa vigraham and recite harivarsanmam loud, joined by Ayyappa bhaktas with watery eyes.. The melshanti then starts putting off the lamps one by one and when the song ends, all the lamps have been put off and the doors are closed till they open early next morning. The lyrics of the Harivarasanam were composed by Sri . Kumbakudi Kulathur Iyer in early 50's and he used to recite it everyday in front of Swamy Ayyappa. A fire destroyed a maojr portion of the Shbriml temple in eary 50' and after the renovations it became a daily routine to chant Harivarsanam before closing the doors at night.
