Ravana carried Seetha off but it was the great ocean which got bound! The deeds of the wicked often result in the suffering for the good. Normally the one who steals something will get bound by the authorities.. But when Ravana carried off Seetha stealthily the sea was bound by Rama by building the sethu over it. This is an amusing sloka to show that the good often suffer from the evil deeds of the wicked. Another one like the above 9,dheepo bhakshayathe Dhvaantham kajjalam cha prasooyathe yaadhrSam bhakshyeth annam jaayathe thaadhrSee prajaa The lamp eats the darkness and gives out soot. Whatever food one eats he produces similar offspring! The lamp dispels darkness and it is imagined that the lamp is eating darkness. The soot produced because of the burning is adi to be the offspring of the lamp. Hence the food determines the kind of offspring one has, says the composer of this verse.
