Guest guest
Dear Jayashankarji,I can tell the story in simple terms since I don't know how to beautify the words. Sorry incase of mistakes. I am very poor in english so bear with me. :-) I think it's a tamil folk.Just before the great war starts, seeing the mighty army of Pandavas, Duryodana becomes restless. He visits the great Bhismacharya and asks him to clear doubt on who's going to win the war. Bhismacharya was in no doubt that Pandavas are going to win. He tells Duryodana that as far Lord Krishna is with Pandavas none can beat them. This worries Duryodana more. Further, Bhismacharya advices Duryodana that there's still time to go for a compromise. Since Dharmaraja himself was not much interested in war, the move for compromise will make him really happy and the fight can be avoided. But Duryodana was not ready to back from the war. Then Bhismacharya sees only other alternative that Duryodana has to go to Sahadeva and seek his advice.Everyone knows that Sahadeva was a perfect astologer and shastra-genius. But, the trouble was he was in enemy camp. After much thought, with no other choice left, Duryodana goes to Sahadeva and seeks his advice. Sahadeva suggests Duryodana that Kaurava can win only if they successfully sacrifice a Supreme-Purusha to Kali devi. There were only three Supreme Purushas existing in the world–Lord Krishna, The Great Arjuna and Iravan, son of Arjuna and Nagakanni Ulupi. Duryodana can not even think of the asking Krishna and Arjuna for sacrifice. Then left was only Iravan. Iravan was very happy when he heard from Duryodana about sacrifice. It's not because Duryodana was begging him to be subject of sacrifice, it's because he could do something for his uncle. He agrees to be present for sacrifice 'if he remains unharmed till that day'. The date was fixed for coming Amavasya day. Duryodana was happy that things were turning good for him. He must have had a good sleep that day.But then, who can prevent Sri Krishna from knowing all this. Bhagvan Krishna speaks to Dharmaraja regarding this. The Lord explains the consequences of the sacrifice. Iravan listening this, peacefully speaks to Bhagvan that if Pandavas sacrifice him before Kauravas, they can make Duryodana's plan flop and Iravan can keep his promise too. Also, the victory will be inevitable, if Pandavas satisfy Kali devi by sacrificing Iravan. So, then that was the fate. Sri Krishna already knows that. The Lord consoled Dharmaraja, Arjuna, Ulupi and others. Iravan was finally sacrificed a day before amavasya for the sake of Pandava victory. As per Iravan's request Bhagvan blessed him to be alive till 8th day of the war. So his head was witnessing the war seating at the centre of the Kurukshetra.I remember read: after the victory of Pandavas, Bhima and Arjuna were thinking themselves being destroyed most of the enemies. When Sri Krishna Paramatma realised this, to curb their arrogance he took them to Iravan and asked him who was the most destructive. Iravan, the prime witness of war, with no doubt announced Abhimanyu being the most destructive of two sides.ThanksPraveen :-)--- On Tue, 3/3/09, jayasankar vattekkat <vinodvattekkat wrote:jayasankar vattekkat <vinodvattekkat[Guruvayur] STORY OF IRAVAN (MAHABHARATHAM)guruvayur Date: Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 3:00 AM OM NAMO NARAYANAYA: Pranamam to All, Anybody can tell me the story of "Iravavn" (Mahabharatham) . Guest guest
it is a pity, many side stories were added in holy mahabharath,to satisfy the mass. in other words, to suit to their own needs, they were added. is there any mention in Narayaneeyam about eravan NO not at all Bhgavatham is also silent equating lord krishna with eravan is, in ,bad taste. krishna On Thu, Mar 5, 2009 at 6:04 PM, praveen nambiar <praveen_nambiar24 wrote: Dear Jayashankarji,I can tell the story in simple terms since I don't know how to beautify the words.
