It is not proper to dig a well when the house is on fire. It is wise to think about any calamity that may occur beforehand and to ward against it. Otherwise it will be like locking the stable after the horse had flown. The well is dug for water which will be useful also when there is fire. But after the house has caught fire will any one dig a well for getting water to quench it? We safeguard our houses against possible burglary not because we expect the robbers to come but only to guard against it if it occurs. It is foolish to be careless and then to regret. People who live extravagantly repent when it is too late. If you do not provide for yourself and help others no one will come to your rescue when you are in need. Not only in material aspect but also spiritually we must follow this principle. Gita says that the one who thinks about the Lord in his last moments is not born again. But how to ensure that we will think about Him in our last moments? Having spent our whole life in worldly pursuits it is not possible to think about the Lord at the time of death. We will only be thinking of our possessions and our kith and kin we are leaving behind. So one should spend the whole life at least from now on in thinking of the Lord and direct our love towards Him detaching ourselves from the worldly attachments. Nothing and nobody nbelongs to us but we belong to the Lord only.
