Guest guest
HINDU RITUALS AND ROUTINES - WHY DO WE FOLLOW THOSE? Why do we do Pradakshina (circumambulate) ? We cannot draw a circle without a center point. The Lord is the center, source and essence of our lives. Recognizing Him as the focal point in our lives, we go about doing our daily chores. This is the significance of pradakshina. Also every point on the circumference of a circle is equidistant from the center. This means that wherever or whoever we may be, we are equally close to the Lord. His grace flows towards us without partiality. Why is pradakshina done only in a clockwise manner ? The reason is not, as a person said, to avoid a traffic jam! As we do pradakshina, the Lord is always on our right. In India the right side symbolizes auspiciousness. So as we circumambulate the sanctum sanctorum we remind ourselves to lead an auspicious life of righteousness, with the Lord who is the indispensable source of help and strength, as our guide - the "right hand". Indian scriptures enjoin - matrudevo bhava, pitrudevo bhava, acharyadevo bhava. May you consider your parents and teachers as you would the Lord. With this in mind we also do pradakshina around our parents and divine personages. After the completion of traditional worship (pooja), we customarily do pradakshina around ourselves. In this way we recognize and remember the supreme divinity within us, which alone is idolized in the form of the Lord that we worship outside. dil se, Bharath.Krishna Doha, Qatar Add more friends to your messenger and enjoy! Guest guest
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna! Dear devotees, Please help to clear a doubt - Why it is saying that to do not complete a full PRADHAKSHINAM in Lord Siva Temples? (we are not permitted to take a full circle, normally we are doing half-circle in clockwise and half circle in anti-clockwise) Regards LejuPillai --- On Wed, 4/1/09, zumbrys <zumbrys wrote: zumbrys <zumbrys[Guruvayur] HINDU RITUALS AND ROUTINES - Part 11guruvayur Date: Wednesday, April 1, 2009, 6:06 PM HINDU RITUALS AND ROUTINES - WHY DO WE FOLLOW THOSE? Guest guest
It is believed that Gangadevi is always flowing from Siva Bhagavan's head. We should not cross the Oovu through which Ganges is flowing. Hence, no full pradakshinam in Siva temples. This is from the book, Thaliyola written by Venganoor Balakrishnan, it has answers for about 290 questions like this and also various mantras and slokas. A very nice book. Guest guest
It is because of the water pouring from the head of Lord Shiva is said to be from Ganga and the devotees are not permitted to cross it. Hence we take a pradakshinam upto the water outlet at the northern side of the garbha griham and complete the pradikshanam by going by apradakshinam. This is only in Kerala temples who are guided by tantric rituals. Even while doing pradashinam, the devotee is to move keeping the bali kkal and the saptha mathrukkal on his right hand side. While retracing the steps he is not supposed to worship any upadevatha, like Parvathy, Ganapathy or Ayyappan etc. After completing the pradakshinam he has to worship the Lord and then go to worship the upa devathas. You may have to make separate pradakshinam to the valia balikkal at the entrance of the temple. Care shoud be taken that your feet should not touch the balikkals placed inside the temple. There is a book published by the Publications Division of Govt. of Kerala on the Temples of Kerala where detailed articles are there about the phala sidhi of various pujas performed.
