Dear all,

One who steals the " chittham " or mind or heart of disciples is a real Guru. Real Gurus are rare. Fake Gurus who steal the " vittham " or money (not chittham) of the disciples are numerous. (also, literally Guru is the one who removes the spiritual ignorance)

A Guru should have at least three qualities:

1. Spiritual knowledge

2. Ability to transfer his knowledge to disciples

3. Sincere affection for the disciples.

One who has only knowledge is called  a scholar or pandithan. A guru should be " manasyekam, vachasyekam, karmanyekam " ,meaning his words and deeds should reflect his thoughts. He should set an example for practicing what he thinks and preaches.

A real Guru is greater than even parents because parents give birth, but Guru frees from birth (from the cycle of birth and death) and gives moksham.

If one cannot find a Guru in flesh and blood meeting the above qualifications of stealing one's heart and who is " manasyekam, vachasyekam, karmanyekam " , then one must accept Bhagavan himself as Guru who has all the prescribed qualities of a Guru and beyond. Bhagavan is the Guru of all Gurus. When we sincerely feel that Bhagavn has stolen our heart like the way Gopikas felt, then we do not need a Guru other than Him. So why worry about not being fortunate enough to find a Guru with whom we are spiritually satisfied? Pray Bhagavan to make us feel the way Gopikas felt for Him. As Nochur Vekataramanji says: " Bhagavan is our greatest Guru and all the others in whom we find more divinity than ordinary people are Upagurus. " Bhagavad Geetha Chapter 10.41 is

yad yad vibhutimat sattvamsrimad urjitam eva vatat tad evavagaccha tvammama tejo-'msha-sambhavam

" When you see any existence intensely rich, abundant, glorious, extraordinary opulent and beautiful, it should be understood as the manifestation of a part of my splendour. "

(All of us are alive because of the divine spark in us. But unfortunately when we see extraordinary success or intelligence or capability we have a tendency to attribute them to one's own effort and ability.)

Swami Atmaswarupandana says:

The guru is not his body. The guru is the Universal Spirit. And that Universal Spirit is omnipresent. It is present within us and without us. That Universal Spirit is capable of leading us and fine tuning us, not just through one body, but through any body It chooses to use, through any insight It chooses to give us, through any spiritual experience It decides to grant us—through any spiritual practice, through any passage in the scripture, through any casual remark from a friend. And, indeed, this knowledge in itself and the practice of this knowledge is a sadhana.

Bhagavan says: If you want to cross this samsara, you must take refuge in Me alone. " In other words, for our sadhana, we must be constantly seeking His guidance—knowing that it is always available if we have the humility to accept it through whatever channel it comes.

Regards and prayers

Savitri
