I remember, you mentioned visiting baby in oakland ICU with brain injury. Glad to know the kids is home again. It's tough. -Monali --- On Wed, 4/29/09, Praseeda Sathaye <praseeda > wrote: Hi folks, Just wanted to inform you that more and more daycare providers are out there to collect money rather than care for your little ones. Please be aware. I selected my daycare provider on Sulekha.com. She was an Indian licensed provider running a home daycare. She was very open and honest with me and also had a 18 month old daughter of her own whom she was looking after. Never would I have imagined what she would have done to my son.... you never know what really happens once you drop off your kid and the door closes. On Jan 30th, we got a call from our daycare provider about our 13 month old son whom she looked after (he had only been going to daycare for 3 weeks). She said that our son had fainted and was being taken to the hospital. When we got to the hospital we learned that he had 3 seizures on the way over to the hospital in the ambulance. This was because he did not have enought oxygen to the brain. HE WAS A COMPLETELY NORMAL CHILD. They did examinations and ct scans, and learned that he had bleeding in the brain. Our son had severe brain injury caused by the baby shaking syndrome. They only knew it was this due to the retinal hemorrages in his eyes. We were transported to oakland childrens hospital and have been living there for 3 months. We are back home now and my son is slowly getting better. He still has ways to go. He needs to learn to eat, crawl, walk and talk again. The sad part about this is we're not sure if he will do everything he once did. However we have faith and hope that he will get there with enough therapy. This has been a very difficult time for our family but we are hopeful that our son will get back to how he once was. His name is Akshay and we ask that all of you could pray for him and that he would get better soon. This incident has changed our lives forever hence I thought I should inform ALL of you with loved ones as I dont want this to happen to your children. #1) our daycare providers name was Preety (Parminder) from Fremont . So if you ever see her advertising, PLEASE do not go to her. They are working on revoking her licence, so its not exactly done yet. She has not admitted to doing this and hence is free of being charged. The soical workers, police and all know its her, however charging her is difficult. The police need Hard evidence like someone having videotaped her doing this to my son Or her admitting, in order to charge her. #2) I believe NOW that if my parents cant watch my kid and my in-laws can't watch my kid, then its time for one person to quit the job (husband or wife) to look after the kid. Of course this is not always possible and many would argue against me... but I am only saying this as this is the choice I would have taken if only I could rewind time. #3) Make sure if you do drop off your kid in daycare, exchange phone #s with other parents and call them often and ask, " so how's she watching your child; what do you think of her watching your child " . Yes, we all have a busy schedule but this is a must. You must do this. #4) My daycare provider was licensed. This DOES NOT MEAN they know how to watch kids. These days it doesnt take much to get a liscense. I don't believe they watch them in action before giving them a license. I was shocked to learn that the licensing facility who granted her a license touched on the subject " baby shaking syndrome " but didnt go much into detail about it. #5) I told my daycare provider several times... " If you're ever frustrated and can't handle it, please give me or my husband a call " . I even asked her every time I picked him up " So how'd it go today " . She never showed any signs of not being able to handle it or discussed it with me. She did this for money which is sick. So Don't assume your daycare provider would tell you no matter How Open she looks to you. If you drop off your kid.. tell her the first day... " Not sure if you know of baby shaking syndrome but it happens when you're frustrated and it could severly injure a childs brain. I DONT want this happening to my child.. so thats why I'm informing you. If you dont feel you could handle it, YOU NEED TO LET ME KNOW right away. " Do not feel weird saying this when nothing has happened to your child. Say this even if you LOVE the way your daycare provider is watching your child. Coz you never know what she knows and doesnt know. #6) Go to a place which has at least 2 providers. I say this because if one cant handle the child, she will give the child to the other provider. #7) Go to a provider who has a LOT of experience (in terms of years). Do not be concerened that there are a lot of children there. We had an option at one time to pick a provider close to our home watching 8 children. We opted out of this because we were concerned that our child would get sick all the time. Trust me, I would take a zillion ear infections and colds now rather than a tramatic brain injury. Lastly, If anyone out there knows of various treatment types (ayurvedic, or special physical therapies, etc) that have cured babies with baby shaking syndrome or any other brain injury too, Please let me know. I would love to hear from you. Any advice you have would be great in terms of great hopsitals for brain injuries, doctors, treatment centers, or therapists. Kids having major falls from a serious height and have a brain injury would fall in the same case as our son. The treament would be the same. So if you know of any real examples (families or friends), we'd like to hear from you on what worked for them. We heard that Kerala has great places for oil treatments but not sure of which centers exactly. We are tamilian and are not that familiar with Kerala, so do let us know if you know of great centers there. If out patient therapy does not work, we are willing to travel to get our son better. We need good references on centers in India if any. I feel like now with out patient therapy the # of therapies my son would now receive is 4 per week when he was getting 4 per day; it has reduced drastically. I'm saying all this since I don't want other parents to go thru what we have been thru and are still going thru; also I don't want your kids to go thru what Akshay is now going thru. It hurts so much to see our son who was once playing away, one of the sharpiest, cutest babies I ever knew.. to how he is now. Please take what I said above seriously and Thanks for your prayers and Please let us know if you have any info at all. Our life is our son and we will not stop trying to get him better as he once was before. -Sindhu --- End forwarded message ---
