Dear Muraliji,

Setting aside a day to respect mother, father, sister or brother may be viewed in a positive way, even if  we are taking care of them everyday. I read about why we celebrate the auspicious days like avathaar days like ashtami rohini, nrusimha jayanthi etc. Main reason is to think more on that day and to contemplate about the greatness of the avathaar and what it teaches us. The same way vrathaas are observed to spend the whole time thinking of God. It does not mean that we should pray only that day. But if the society celebrates, even the less fortunate who does not pray everyday is reminded and becomes fortunate to pray that day. Of course the person who prays everyday probably wants to spend more time contemplating HIs glories. And in spite of the big celebration, there may be some people who are not interested at all.

Because of the nuclear family concept and society's inclination towards individualism, we see lot of changes all over the world and things are not the same as it was 20 years ago. Change is inevitable. In India also we can see changes. So setting aside a day to respect mother or father may be a good idea. In North India they have a day called Raksha Bandhan to reinforce the relationship between brother and sister. So, may be we can take it as a day to reinforce the importance of the role of a mother in one's life and how much we owe her for what we are.

I am not saying that we need a mother's day to remember our mother. This is just another way to look at it and use it to enrich our feelings towards mother. To be honest with you, I did think about my late mother yesterday much more than everyday. Before I start my day, I do namaskar and think of my parents every single day. But just because people around me were celebrating Mother's day I thought about her so much.

I did not write these words to invite a controversial discussion. Just expressed how I would like to view this as one more opportunity to think and contemplate on my prathyksha daivam.

Regards and prayers

Savitri

I agree with Savitri's view point on reinforce the importance of the role of a mother in ones life. There is no need to stereotype westerns society as some one who cares for mother only on mother's day. We Indians are not totally perfect. We have so many Indians who don't take care of their elders so I will not say our culture is perfect. Every culture/religion has its own positives and negatives and it will be good if we learn from each others positives.

Here is what we can learn from western world. Western society takes pride in financial independence and good physical fitness. In my GYM I see so many 60 and 70 year old Americans running on a thread mills and eating proper diet to keep oneself active for longer period of time. Woman are encouraged to study and work outside their homes and make a career so that they (mother's) are financially independent and do not have to depend on husband or children for the their financial support.
