Guest guest
Namaste. There is an episode in the Puranas which says that the Devas and Asuras churned the Milk Ocean with the Mandara mountain as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. They got the Moon, the Kalpakavriksha, Kamadhenu, Chintamani, nectar and Goddess Lakshmi. This episode has been given an allegorical meaning in Sankaracharya’s Sivanandalahari, sloka No. 37. The meaning of the sloka is:-- Wise men churn the ocean in the form of the Vedas with their virtuous mind as the churning rod,and firm devotion as the rope. By this churning they get Lord Siva, in union with Goddess Uma, who fulfills all desires, just as the Kamadhenu, Kalpakavriksha and Chintamani (a gem) do, who confers eternal bliss like nectar, and who grants liberation like Goddess Lakshmi.
