Vedant Desika describes a guru in his nyasa vumSathi in the first sloka

The one who wishes to elevate himself shoud try to get a guru who is

established in good tradition, of firm intellect, wellversed in vedas

and sastrhas, pssesses brahmajnana, endowed with sathva guna, true in

his words, has good conduct in accordance with dharma, free from

ostentation and envy, has conquered his senses, a eternal realtive, full

of mercy, corrects when the disciple goes astray iand ntent on the good

for him and others .

Actually if one is genuinly interested in findng a proper guru and prays

to Lord He Himself will send one at proper time.I can declare this to

be true from my own experience.
