Guest guest
Hari-Om ---------- Temple Prasadam Prasadam is a food offering to the reighning deity of a temple. After the prasadam is offered during pooja, it is distributed among the devotees present, Every temple and the deity have their favourite prasadam. In Guruvyoor it is Palpayasam, guruvayoorppn's faourite. In sabarimala it is Aravana payasam and Appam. In Ambalpuzha again it is Palpayasm, the deity being, Sree Krishna. Ambalapuzha is about 13 kms distance from Alapuzha. Ambalpuzha temple is very popular, well-known for the Ambalpuzha Palpayasam. The age old receipe gives it the rare and unique taste incomparable to any other. It has a slight pink color and similar but not same prepartion can be done at home but that can wait. There is a legend behind the Ambalapuzha Palpayasam. Once Lord Krishna, in the guise of a travelling, alms-seeking sadhu appeared in the palace of the Chambakassery Raja. The discussion turned to the favourite pass time of Kings, Chess. The king challenged the sadhu to a game and declred that if the sadhu won, he coudld ask for any reward. The sadhu declined and asked for only a few grains of rice to be placed on each of the chess board squares. The king was really surprised that the sadhu should ask for such a trivial reward. The game strted and before long the sadhu was declared the winner. When asked how he wanted the rice grain to be presented, the sadhu said : please place one grain of rice in the first square, two in the second squae, four in the third, and so on, that is doubling the quantity with each square. The attendents were asked to follow the order but the King soon realised his folly. By the time they reached the 20th square, they needed One million grains, and by the time they reached the 40th square, it required One thrillion grains. The chess board has 64 squares and at the end of the excercise, thrillions of tons of rice are needed. The entire stock of the kingdom or the country will not suffice. The king was in a dialemma but Lord Krishna showed His real form and told the king not to worry, the king could arrange to prepare and distribute Palpayasam (using rice) as Prasadam free to the temple devotees everyday until the debt is cleared. The king agreed. That is the origin of Ambalapuzha Palpayasam. Ironically,at present the temple sells the Payasam at a very hefty price. jai shree krishna ! Guest guest
Achuthan Nairji, Hari Om, Ambalapuzha palpayasam is no doubt the best among palpayasams served in any temple. When I was in Ambalapuzha, I had detailed discussion with the temple santhi. Till recently they were selling payasam only for Rs.30/- per liter. Now they have increased the cost @Rs.60/- which again when compared to palpayasams of other temples very cheap. But you have to book it in advance and wait for getting it after 12.30 pm for the ucha pooja to be over. The temple is getting a step motherly treatment from the govt. and the vacancies of emplyees are not filled and the whole work load is to be borne by lesser number of employees. Their union is affiliated to marxist party union and hence they dont put their heart and mind in their work. When the devotees are asked to remove shirt when entering the temple, I saw one employee in his uniform directing the devotees. There are two interesting stories relating to Ambalapuzha. In 1852 when Tippu Sultan was invading Malabar and Zamorin, the king of Kozhikode, asked the idol of Guruvayurappan to be protected at any cost because he was administering the temple. The poojaris, called santhikars, removed the idol and took it southwards heading for Thiruvananthapuram. But when they reached Ambalapuzha, they wanted to have a break and the idol of Guruvayurappan was kept in Ambalapuzha temple. Guruvayurappan received all the pujas he would have received while at Guruvayoor and the palpayasam was liked by him very much. When peace returned to malabar they wanted to take back Guruvayurappan to Guruvayur but he was reluctant. Of course they took the idol to Guruvayur and installed him, but in the place where the idol of guruvayurappan was kept, they put a board with all this story and a lamp is lit and palpayasam is kept as an offering to Guruvayurappn even today. Anybody visiting this part of Kerala please visit Ambalapuzha and see the place when Guruvayurappan was kept for some time. Another interesting story is that Kunjan Nambiar the creator of Ottanthullal used to play his thullal in .Ambalapuzha temple. Once when the play was on, the Chembakassery Raja was sleepy and was dozing, which irritated Kunjan Nambiar, he made fun of the Raja. Raja got angry and banned the ottan thullal in the temple. The Mizhavu, the instrument of Nambiar which he plays during thullal was confiscated.. It is still there in a separate enclosure with a board displaying these pieces of history. After more than 220 year, the Ottan thullal was permitted to enacted in the Ambalapuzha temple by the present Devaswam board and this history was remembered. There are several legends connected with Ambalapuzha and Guruvayoor and other temples and they are all very interesting. I spent several years in Africa. We had our cultural organizations and used to celebrate Onam Vishu etc. We , volunteers prepared all the sadhya items. My friiend mr. Pillai was the chief cook and I, his deputy. Pillai came from Ambalapuzha (near the temple) and his preparation of Pradhaman and payasam was superb. Guest guest
One more piece of history about Ambalapuzha. Later the Maharaja of Travancore who relished the palpayasam wanted to get it made in Trivandrum and asked the cooks of Padmanabha Swamy temple to make it exactly the way it is made in Ambalapusha. They tried but they could not succeed. They thought perhaps the vessel in which the payasam is made may have a special mellurgical composition which adds up to the taste. They got the Varpu brought to Trivandrum. But it did not make any difference. They tried with the rice and the sugar but nothing can bring the special taste of Ambalapuzha Palpayasam. It is said that the water from the small well in the sanctum sanctorium called the Mani Kinar, held the secret for the special taste of the payasam. It is from this kinar they take the water for making the payasam and for the abhishekam of the idol of the God himself.
