Guest guest
Hari OM!Thanks Anil ji, for reminding us. Ramayana masam starts a week from tomorrow. As far as I know, the system is to complete reading the Ramayanam in full during Ramayana month. Some people omit Uttarakandam. I have talked to people who wouldn't read uttarakandam at all.! Choice of chapter is entirely up to the individual. More apt will be to select a few stuti's - Kausalya stuti, Jadayu stuti, Sree Ramopadesam (to lakshmana or lakshmana gita), Agasthyopadesam, etc. for daily chanting and meditation. Elders and guru dev's, please correct / enhance the idea.As you know, the entire Ramayanam is available in www.guruvayoor.com site and many people have wrote to me that they listen to it daily during the karkiTaka masam while carrying out their household work. They read for a while along with the audio in the morning and then take care of daily work and just listen, and in the evening they spend some quality time with Ramayanam!..All the best!Sukumar--- On Mon, 7/6/09, Anil NN <anilnn wrote:Anil NN <anilnn[Guruvayur] Ramayana Masam - July 17, 2009 to August 16, 2009 (Karkidaka Masam)guruvayur Received: Monday, July 6, 2009, 2:39 AM Ramayana maasam starts on July 17 and ends on August 16, 2009Ramayana is read every day in the evening when the lamp is lit and completed within a span of 31 days. The practice was considered auspicious as well as a consolation to the agrarian society, as this rainy month gave least yield and was marked with poverty, diseases and unhappiness. The ritual of Ramayana reading evolved in the 16th century after Ramayanam Kilippattu, written by the great poet Thunchathu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan the father of Malayalam langauge, became popular among the common man as this Malayalam version of the epic was simple and easy to understand. Ramayanam has always been an integral part of every Hindu's life. Ramayana is divided in various kandam (chapters) so the paarayanam (reading) is in the chronological order or one can choose just one chapter and read it the entire month. The reason why Ramayana was read has its roots in a philosophy. 'Dhramachyuthi' happens when people dont have money. When people starve or are short of cash, they tend to think of evil ways to get food and money. Ramayana exhorts one to uphold the right and lead the path of Dharma. Raman's story is full of doing the right thing. He renounced the crown to uphold his fathers words, fought Ravana fair and square to win back his captive wife, he left Sita in the forest when people started casting aspersions on her character, for he believed that the King should lead by example and was above suspicion. Ramayana tells us how to lead a dharmic life, never wavering from the path of right. It was felt that people reading Ramayana will never succumb to the temptations of evil.Times have changed. Society has moved away from an agrarian economy. The reading of Ramayana in the houses in Kerala is a rarity these days. Instead of houses, the Ramayanam is now read in temples and in programs conducted by organizations. The temptation to succumb to wrong ways is now throughout the year. When such tempation arises, let us take Ramayana and read it.Gurujis, some queries...Should one read only one chapter for the complete month? Or is one chapter recommended to those who may not find time to read all days of the month to complete the full reading of Ramayana? If so,how does one choose a chapter? Guest guest
Hariom.Reading and listening is good;what is BETTER is listening(not HEARING) to discourses by learned Mahatmas who are well versed in Sastras(Upanishad,Bh.Geeta,SR.Bhagavatham) etc.The apparent reason is that the cardinal problem of IGNORANCE and allied worries, tensions will be eradicated permanently only by gaining JNANA(knowledge),from a GURU. prabhakarji, C/0 GUruvayurappan, gvr.
