There is a myth about Surya grahan in Hinduism. When Lord Dhanwanthiri brought up Amrit after churning of the ocean, and pesented it to the Devas, the asuras cunningly snatched it away. Too retrieve it Mahavishnu plotted a plan.. He took the female form of Mohini and started charming the Asuras. The asuras were captivated by the enchanting beuty of Mohini and fell for her and forgot their surroundings. Taking advantage of the situation Mahavishnu grabbed the Amrit and started distributing it among the Devas sitting in a row. An asura, by name Rahu realised their folly and sat between Surya and Chandra, disguised as a Deva. Before Mohini could give Rahu the Amrit, Surya recognised Rahu to be a Demon. Instantly Mohini chopped off Rahu's head and sent it flying to the sky. The head took the form of a snake-head and still remains in the sky, and from time to time Rahu pops his head to take revenge on Surya and Chandra. He blocks each other's path and view and both of them start fighting. That is when Surya grahan and Chandra grahn occur. If one takes a dip in the Brahma Sarovar in Kurukshetra, Haryana, all bad efects of the eclipse will be washed away. This is where Mahabharata war took place and also the place where Lord Krishna imparted the teachings of Bhagavat gita to Arjuna. The Kurukshetra War lasted 18 days and on the 14th day of the war a solar eclipse took place with the blessing of Sree Krishna and that gave Arjuna the advantge to kill his main opponents. jai shree krishna ! So getting a human body is not an every day affair. This most auspicious opportunity only comes after many millions of lifetimes in the lower species. Anyone who does not utilize their human life for self-realization is making the greatest mistake. When this happens it is the greatest tragedy, and unfortunately today this neglect of the human form has become the standard behavior for the entire human society. What can be done? We must first ourselves become solidly situated in Krishna consciousness and then do the highest welfare activity of spreading to everyone else all over the world.
