Guest guest
Hari-om ----------- The day of Sravan poornima in mid August is Raksha Bandan Day celebrated by Hindus all over. It s an auspecious day when siters tie a sacred thread on the wrist oftheir brothers , thus proclaiming a bondage between them affirming his protection for his sister year round. Not only siblings but everyone follows this custom. In ancient days wives tied raksha on her husband's wrist for his protection. Hindu princesses tied it around Moghul princesses declaring bhai-bhehen. Kunti tied on her grndson's wrist for his proction during Mahabharata war. It is a common practice nowadays even in Kerala for the temple poojari to conduct pooja and tie the safron thread on the wrists of the devotees. But not many devotees realise and understand its significance. "Therefore when Brahmin priests perform puja rituals, they chant a famous mantra while tying the 'nada chhadi' (raksha) on a devotee:Yena baddho Baliraja daanavendro Mahaabala, tena twaamabhi badh naami rakshe maa chala maa chala. i.e. I tie on you (the devotee) the raksha which was tied on Bali, the King of demons. Therefore O Raksha! Do not ever fail to protect this devotee, do not ever fail. -Bhavishyottara Puran : 137/20 The origin of raksha Bandan is when asura King Bali's devotion wins over Sree Narayan , Bhagavan is pressured to leave His abode Vikuntha and stay in bali's kingdom, SUTAL for ever. His distressed consort Laxmi arrives in Sutal, Bali's kingdom on Sravan Poornima day to clim her Lord. She ccepts Bali s her brother by tying the Raksh and in turn Bali gives her a boon. She asks for the release of her Lord but as per verbal promise, Bhagavan has to guard the Palace year round. however the other trimurtis come to His aid and promise that they, Brahma and Siva would take turns and do guard duties for four months each thus relieving Bhagavn to do only four months duty. Thus HIs turn starts on Ashad sud Ekadasi for 4months and ends on Kartik ekadasi. Thus everything ends well. jai shree krishna !
