Dharmaakhyaane SmaSaane cha rogiNaam yaa mathiH bhaveth Saa sarvadhaa eva thishTeth cheth ko na muchyetha banDhanaath If the thought that occurs while hearing the discourses on dharma , in cremation ground and during incurable disease prevails at all times who will not be released from bondage? When we hear the discourses on aspects of dharma dealing with the bondage and liberation we feel that the worldly pleasures are transient and at that moment we feel like turning a new leaf. But the feeling lasts only as long as we are in the discourse and we put on our attachments and desires along with our slippers left outside. Someone asked a sage in Varanasi, when the dip in Ganges is supposed to purify the sins why does a man not become pure immediately but continues his sinful life. The sage answered that those who dip in Ganges leave off their desires and attachment on the bank along with their clothes only to put them on like the clothes on leaving then waters. Similarly when one attends a scene of death he thinks about the transitory nature of human life and the futility of attachment to people and possessions but the effect though not as soon as in the case of the listening to discourses, nevertheless wears off after sometime. Yudhishtira was asked by the yaksha what was the greatest wonder and he answered that the man sees death all around but still he thinks that he is going to live for ever and that is the greatest wonder. When one is suffering from some incurable disease he thinks that he never wants t be born again. But it is too late. He should have had the thought from the beginning of life and should have tried to live a life of detachment. Hence it is said that if the thought of detachment that come to one on these occasions should be present always in which case everyone will be able get out of bondage.
