One day she was late and the temple got closed. She could reach only up to the banyan tree (from where elephant race starts during Utsavam), and started feeling guilty. Poonthanam, on his way back from the temple saw her crying near the banyan tree. He comforted her and said that she could place the garland on the stone at the foot of the banyan tree, since the Lord is everywhere. She was convinced, kept the garland there and went home with satisfaction. Next day morning, the Melsanthi removed all the garlands from the idol, but one garland remained stuck on the idol. The devotees were puzzled but Poonthanam realised last night’s event. It was the garland, which Manjula had placed on the stone at the foot of the banyan tree. Poonthanam told the story to everyone and then the garland slipped down from the idol. Devotees started chanting the name of the Lord and struggled to collect the flowers from the garland. Worshipers went to the banyan tree to offer their obeisance. Since then, the banyan tree came to be known as Manjulal. --- On Thu, 8/20/09, jayasankar vattekkat <> wrote: jayasankar vattekkat <vinodvattekkat[Guruvayur] Story of Manjulal"GURUVAYURAPPAN" <guruvayur >Thursday, August 20, 2009, 10:23 AM ഓം നമോ നാരായണായ: Pranamam to All, Anybody can explain me the story of Manjulal With Prayers, Jayasankar See the Web's breaking stories, chosen by people like you. One day, an old brahmin who was attracted to her obstructed her path to the temple and hence she got delayed to reach the temple. The next day,the garland was given back to Manjula from the idol in the temple. This was the story ,which was depicted in the malayalam movie, Guruvayurappan, which was released many years ago. My husband, N.V.P .Menon has written a dance drama on Manjula charitham few years ago and that was choreographed and danced in Melpattur auditorium, by Rema rao and group from calicut. This story was slightly different in that the old brahmin who was Guruvayurappan himself who was testing the devotion of Manjula. Any way the tree where, Manjula placed the garland later was called by the name, manjulal.
