This is started as an honour to Shankaracharya. Ihs samadhi day is taken as the first day.This corresponds to 825AD. So chingam 1 of this year is 1185. The vishu is the astronomical new year which is also tamil newyear This corresponds to equinox . As we all know, the most important day in kerala is also Onam, thiruvonam day of Chingam.
