Guest guest
Today, September 2, 2009, Srona star of Sravana month, (Thiruvonam star of Chingam month) about 30 million people celebrate the festival of Onam believing that it is the day on which King Mahabali returns to the state of Kerala, India to see his subjects. This is the day on which Lord Vishnu took incarnation as Lord Vamana. Hindus offer prayers and offerings to the Lord respecting this avatara. Unlike the popular belief, Lord Vamana did not punish King Bali and send him to the netherworld as evidenced by the scriptures. It is true that He took the heaven from the king and gave it to the rightful owner. But He blessed Bali and allowed him to stay in a world (Sutalam which is more magnificent than heaven) of his own with his family, friends and subjects. The Lord promised to guard King Bali's world to protect him always. Subsequently during a different manvantara (the time period of one manu) the Lord made him the Indra or the ruler of heaven. On this holy day I pray that Lord Vishnu blesses every living and non-living object in the universe. Hari Om! Chith K.
