"There is no greater god than one’s own mother, no greater river than Ganga and no fast (vratham) greater than Ekadasi" say the scriptures.

When does Ekadasi occur

Ekadasi (eleventh day after new/full moon), hence occurs every fortnight, each month has two Ekadasi's one in Sukhlapaksha (Bright half) and one in Krishnapaksha (Dark half). Both Ekadasi's are to be followed.

Determination of Ekadasi thithi

Vaishnavas (worshippers of Lord Vishnu) need Shuddha Ekadasi, which means that dasami thithi must not be present during arunodayam (1.3 Hours before sunrise). Hence the occurrence of Ekadasi changes with location. To find the exact Ekadasi thithi in your location, please refer: http://www.ahobilamutt.org/us/services/ekadasi/ekadasi01.asp.

The Smarthas, do not have such requirement for them dasami thithi must not be present at sunrise.

Who can perform Ekadasi Vratham

Our scriptures say that all healthy persons regardless of Varnashrama between eight and eighty years of age MUST follow this vratham. Even during the periods of ritual impurity such as mrythakam and suthakam, the fasting has to be followed without actually worshipping the Lord. The rules of Ekadasi are relaxed for the sick, and those who are travelling

Benefits of observing Ekadasi Vrathams

The material as well as spiritual benefits of Ekadasi vratham are so immense that it is not possible to list them all. The punyas of performing this vratham not only liberate the devotee but also his ancestors wherever they may be. The power of Ekadasi is compared to a fire which is capable of burning away a mountain of past sins, as a small spark can burn a huge stack of hay.

How to observe Ekadasi

Ekadasi is a vratham and not just a fast, hence it involves other rituals such as bathing on the evening of dasami and praying to Lord Vishnu for a successful vratham. One has to wake up before sunrise on Ekadasi and then after the morning bath, one has to worship Lord Narayana with great care and devotion. Offering Him, flowers, several fruits and nicely prepared Navedhyams. Offering bright deepams, and best incense and chandanam. Reciting stotrams such as Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam etc.

One then has to fast the entire day and night.

Depending upon the ability of the devotee, the fasting can be total without even water (Nirjalam), or only with fruits (Phalaaharam), or cooked foods such as sabudhana, potato, sweet-potato etc.

It is very important to note, that rice, dal, lentils and beans are strictly avoided as they break the fast. Food cooked by those who are not fasting and outside food is prohibited.

Furthermore, one must not eat lavishly on Ekadasi on permitted foods also, and must not drink beverages like tea/coffee/soft-drinks, neither can one eat betel leaves-nuts, and honey. Some also say that no leafy vegetables such as spinach can be eaten.

One must not sleep during the day as this breaks the fast, neither can one oil ones hair or have an oil bath.

Even the prasadam offered to God if it contains rice etc, must be stored to be eaten on the next day, Dwadasi.

It is recommended to bathe thrice in morning, afternoon and at evening. But working people, can bathe again in the evening and then recite stotrams and bhajans. Hence on Ekadasi, the devotee must spend the whole day in remembering Lord Hari and not pass time in mundane activites such as watching TV etc. Neither one must get angry, abusive, or be sorrowful on any accord.

How to break the fast on Dwadasi

The devotee must rise early before sunrise on Dwadasi and after having his bath, must again worship Lord Vishnu as he did on Ekadasi, the devotee must pray that Lord Vishnu be pleased with this vratham and then surrender all the fruits of this vratham to Sri Krishna. Then he can proceed to break his fast. The fast can be broken by sipping three times, Vishnupadatheertham and then one can eat prasadam containing grains.

The most important part of the Ekadasi vratham is the timely breaking of the fast on Dwadasi morning, as one see from the story of Sri Ambarisha Maharaja. It is very critical that the fast must be broken within 2.5 hours (6 nazhigai) of sunrise. Hence breaking of the fast must be done as early as possible just after sunrise. The timing of breaking the fast can be obtained from the link http://www.ahobilamutt.org/us/services/ekadasi/ekadasi01.asp

Again Dwadasi is a very sacred day, and one must spend this day as purely as possible without engaging in any sinful activities.

Special Ekadasis

The most important Ekadasi is Sri Vaikuntha Ekadasi, which occurs in the Dhanur masam (Dec-Jan), it is grandly celebrated for 21 days in Sri Rangam. On this Ekadasi, the northern doors of Sri Vaikuntham are thrown open for all Vishnu bhaktas, hence by observing this Ekadasi strictly one is said to reach Vaikuntham itself after death,

Hari Shayana Ekadasi (June-July) is again an important Ekadasi as on this day Sri Vishnu goes into His Yoga nidra and this is the start of ‘ChaturMaasamâ€.

Prabodhini Ekadasi (Oct-Nov) is an important Ekadasi as on this day Sri Vishnu wakes up from His Yoga nidra, ending the “Chatur Maasamâ€.

All Ekadasi coinciding with Sravana Nakshatra (Hari Nakshatra) are very special and Sravana Dwadasi is considered even more auspicious than Ekadasi.

As long as this body permits, the devotees must always try to strictly observe all Ekadasis and Dwadasis.

Dear Sreekumarji,

I am attaching a list of ekadasis and their names. I am not sure where I got it from. At one point, I was trying to study more about all the stories behind Ekadashis and happened to see it and saved it for future use. Please see the attached table.
