Mahavishnu in a rare pause

The Poornathrayeesa Temple . Thripunithura

A DIVINE LOVE STORY.

===================================

Poornathrayeesa means lord of three vedas. Poorna = full ; thray = three; esa = eswara -lord of vedas.

The presiding deity at this temple is Mahavishnu in the form of Santhangoplamurthy.

He is the protector of the Cochin Royal family. Childless couples who pray to Santhanagoplam gets His blessings.

This temple is more than 5000 years old and legend has it that the mighty Arjuna of the Pandava brothers built the temple and installed the idol presented to him by Mahavishnu Himself. Mahavishnu instructed him to find a suitable place to install the idol on earth. On the way Arjuna requested Ganapathy to go ahead and scout for the place. After a long search Vinayaka found the place but he liked it so much so that he decided to install himself there instead of showing it to Arjuna.

When Ganapthy did not return, Arjuna and his party started serching for him. Finally Arjuna found Ganapathy sitting cozyly where he had installed himself. Arjuna lost his temper, kicked Vinayaka on his b... and threw him to the southern side where he still sits. Arjuna then installed the vigraha at that place.

After installation Arjuna could not find anything suitable to offer as nivedyam and looking around he found some gingelly seeds. He collected a few seeds, sqeezed the oil out and lit a lamp in front of the idol. This lamp still shines as a KEDAVILAKKU . The Sree Kovil is in the form of a CHARIOT .

The Divine Love Story

-------------------------

A young girl from the nearby Namboothiri illom was very much devoted to Santhngopalamurthy, tht she would visit the temple daily and pray in front of Him . Her devotion was so intense, that it changed to pure divine love for Him. Not a day passed without Mangema ( that was her name) visiting her ishtadevatha. Time went by and Mangema became a teenger. As per Namboothiri customs, the parents of Mangema decided to arrange her Veli ( marriage) to some elderly brahmin from far away place.Young Mangema could not even imagine such a thing . The only image in her mind as a life partner was Santhanagoplam Himself and noone else.

Early next morning clad in her best attire visited the temple. Prostating in front of the murthy, she started crying and pleading to be saved from the arranged marriage and swearing that she loves only Lord Santhanagopalam.

All of a sudden a voice from the Sree Kovil said:

Mangema, leave all your ornaments at the Sopanam and anter the Sreekovil ! She did as she was told and on entering, she disappeared and became one with her beloved Lord.

On the fourth day during the annual temple festival, the thidambu of the idol is taken on elephant to Mangema's illom where the eldest male and female members receive Poornathrayeesa at the Vadukkini and serve milk and ripe banana honoring Him as a member of the family.

Dear Nairji,

Thank you for sharing the story of Poornathrayeesha and Nangema. It is a beautiful story. ( I think it should be Nangema and not Mangema. Nangema is the pet name used instead of the real name Uma. My mother was നങàµà´™àµ‡à´®. ) I have heard so much about Poornathrayeesha and never had the good fortune so far to have a darshan.

Regards an dprayers

Hari-om

Thank you Savitriji for pointing out the error.

You are right. due to an oversight the name Nangema ( Antharjanam ) was misspelt as Mangema.

jai shree krishna !
