Dear all,

Lord shiva is known as Smashaanavaasa or one who lives permanently in cemetery or Smashaanam. There is an interesting story behind His decision to live in Smashaanam.

Lord Shiva is Karunaakaran or kindness personified like Lord Vishnu and always wanted to bless people. But often He was disappointed because majority of people will not even seek His blessings.

First he tried to live in the hearts (or hrudaya guha) of people so that it would be easy for them to look inside (or at least that was what He thought) and seek His blessings. He was very near and He thought it would be easy to be dear to them and He could shower blessings on them. Unfortunately very few of them looked inside and those who did He showered blessings on them. He still lives in the heart of those who look inside. Others opened all their indriyaas or senses only outward. They acted as if they were unaware of His illuminating presence or the big cloud of materialism and desires covered the Lord shining like a bright Sun with in them.

So He decided to leave the hearts of those who look only outward and tried to go and sit in lot of temples. Actually situation was better because more people came to the temples because they could see the murthy or Deity with their outward eyes. A small percentage of the population took advantage of this and visited temples and seeked His blessings and He showered blessings on them profusely. Out of this small percentage of people who came to the temple, some did not really take time to look at Him and pray to Him, but they just came to socialize and to have fun. He was happy that at least they glanced at Him and He provided what ever He could in that split second. But still a very big percentage did not even visit temples..

He thought of several ways to attract the poor souls and tried going and sitting in His most favorite place, Kailasam in Himalaya. There also very few came to seriously seek Him and those who came and stayed never left Him. So He remained there also for their sake. Some people came there for mere site seeing, but fortunately they became great devotees by appreciating His illuminating presence and purity spread through out Himalyas. They could extrapolate that divinity and imagine it spreading the whole Universe. Even though they came back home after the trip, they always looked inside to see Him and pray to HIm. So Lord was very happy to live in their hearts.  But some came, took photographs of his magnificent surroundings and left with an empty heart! He felt sorry for them and could not do anything to attract them.

Finally He found a solution, a permanent solution. He decided to live in the cemetery where everybody will come when the body falls after exhausting the karmaas for this janma. This was true for every single soul born on earth, irrespective of where one is born, one's profession, financial status, sex, whether humans, animals, insects, trees. Those who are born will perish. This is the Universal rule. Lord was very happy to be there because He could bless not only humans, He could bless all living things by being present at their cemetery. One more thing He noticed. Even before their own death, some people benefited by accompanying the dead body of their kith and kin to the cemetery. Seeing their dear one's body transforming into a handful of ashes, they experienced at least a temporary Vairagyam or detachment called Smashaana Vairagyam and that was a good opportunity for Him to enter and stay in their heart!

Can we imagine His kindness and how much trouble He really takes to bless us! This Lord only made Mahakavi Kumaaranaashan write the following verse:

à´•à´·àµà´Ÿà´‚ à´¸àµà´¥à´¾à´¨à´µà´²à´¿à´ªàµà´ªà´®àµ‹ à´ªàµà´°à´àµà´¤à´¯àµ‹ സജàµà´œà´¾à´¤à´¿à´¯àµ‹ വംശമോ
