He was born on December 30, 1879 and left this mortal world on April 14, 1950. The sage had a large number of disciples but he was a man of few words. Through his long hours of silence, the sage communicated effectively. Paul Brunton, a British journalist, came to India in search of a guru in 1931. He met Sri Ramana Maharshi. Brunton had previously met many sages in India and being attracted to Maharshi, stayed near the asramam for several days. One of the dialogs between the two that have been reported is as follows. Paul Brunton: "Should I get rid of all the possessions?" To this Maharshi replied: "The possessor too." What Sri Ramana Maharshi meant was that one should not even have the feeling of aham (or self) which is the cause of all attachments and possessions. Hari Aum!
