Guest guest
A friend of ours, a sergeant first-class sniper who recently returned from Iraq, told us a story that has inspired us in our attempts to share kirtan with others. When he was in Iraq, he would regularly sing kirtan at the bases, knowing how soothing repeating God's names can be. Some of the men and women under him took to chanting and listening to kirtans perhaps as a means to center themselves, or perhaps because they simply enjoyed the sound of the music. Whatever the reason, something stuck. Our friend, now safe at home, received an email from a soldier still in Iraq. He told the story of how he was driving in a convoy, when an IED went off and the hummer in front of him blew up. Running up to the Hummer he pulled out a soldiers body and started performing CPR but the soldier had passed on. He then noticed that the dead man still had earbuds in his ear. The music was still playing: a kirtan from GauraVani.com. We are honored to be instruments in speading kirtan all over the world, but we know that we are not the reason that kirtan comes to people when they need it most. We know that we are not the only ones who can sing kirtan. We do not claim to do it best. We only know that a little bit of chanting is so powerful that it will go a long way. Maybe it will even reach Iraq. At the present moment our minds are polluted with the dirt accumulated over millions and millions of lifetimes of sense gratification. Even though our original pure nature is eternal, full of knowledge, and full of bliss, due to our mental contamination we are presently suffering in the realm of temporality, ignorance, and misery. By the purificatory process of chanting the holy names of God we can revive our original, pure nature and thus relish the sweetest happiness at every minute.
